Ex-Teammate Equates LaMelo Ball to NBA Champion Iman Shumpert for Clown Reasons

The Charlotte Hornets‘ season so far has not been going according to the script. They have only been able to secure seven wins in the 21 games they have played, dropping to the 13th position in the East. A major reason for their abysmal performance has been the injury to their franchise cornerstone, LaMelo Ball. The 22-year-old sprained his right ankle during a drive to the basket on November 26th against the Orlando Magic. It has been more than two weeks since Ball played, which has been a cause for concern for the Hornets since he is the leading scorer on the team.

The injury was even more alarming since it happened in the same ankle he fractured back in February, which ended his season prematurely. However, amid the injury concerns, LaMelo is being likened to former champion Iman Shumpert for rather unusual reasons.

It was none other than Ball’s ex-teammate, Isaiah Thomas, who drew the peculiar comparison. The 2x NBA All-Star recently took some time to do a Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter). One user named @Ravensgreat asked him, “Funniest teammate ever?” According to Thomas, the funniest teammates he has shared the court with are LaMelo Ball, his Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Iman Shumpert, and Boston Celtics teammate Evan Turner.

Thomas hasn’t played since 2021–22, in which he split his 22 games between the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and the Hornets. His last stint was with the Hornets, when they signed him to a 10-day contract. He then went unsigned for the entirety of the next year and hasn’t suited for any team this year either. But can he make a comeback after his prolonged absence?

Isaiah Thomas is hopeful for an NBA comeback

Isaiah Thomas’ career trajectory is rather tragic. After getting drafted as the last pick in the 2011 NBA draft, the undersized 5’9 guard’s MVP-level performance has earned him two consecutive All-Star appearances. However, it all came crashing down in 2017 when he suffered a hip injury. He then made an early return before the injury was fully healed, which gravely affected his production. Following the hip ailment, he struggled to get back to his previous form, and his stats saw a steady decline. As a result, he soon found himself unsigned.

But he still hasn’t given up on his NBA dreams. In an interview with Forbes’ Mat Issa, Thomas divulged his desire to play meaningful basketball before hanging up his shoes. Therefore, he’s “still working out and staying ready” in the event of a potential return to the NBA. Should any team take a chance on Thomas, he’d be prepared to hit the ground running without requiring a warm-up period.
