Recently, the contents of an alleged audiotape of NBA star Ja Morant using derogatory language with a referee became public. This event happened last year after a game in OKC. The event and the aftermath highlight the complex connection between sports players and the media.
Claiming that he had access to the audio, NBA insider Tom Haberstroh said that Morant used an expletive for the referee. “Last year, Ja Morant called an NBA referee ‘a ho’ on the record in an interview after a game in OKC,” Haberstroh posted. “It never got out. I obtained the audio, and reflected on the important role of in-person media as a guardrail for the NBA superstar,” he wrote on X sharing a link to the article containing the alleged exchange.
After the contents of the recording were shared, fans expressed their disappointment. Many fans sided with the NBA star and questioned the intention and timing of the release of contents of the audio. A fan called out Haberstroh and said he was “embarrassed” for him.
