The Nikola Jokic-led Denver Nuggets pulled off a sweet surprise last season. Despite starting off with no big hype around them, the Nuggets were crowned NBA champions for the 2022-23 season. While they celebrated the highly deserved victory, there might be more reasons to celebrate for Jokic’s teammate.

As the tradition goes, good players are always rewarded for their contributions. Although one peculiar condition is put on the forthcoming reward for Jokic’s teammate, the upside of it is surely mind-boggling.

The Siberian-born was one of the strongest MVP contenders last season. He ended the season averaging 24.5 points per game. On top of that, he also had 11.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game. Spearheading the Nuggets to their title, Jokic ended up being the finals MVP. Now that the teams are back and all set for a brand new season, the Nuggets Blue Arrow is set to receive a supermax extension to his contract. Although it is still in the works, the General Manager Calvin Booth recently made the major announcement.

Despite not having a full breakout season yet, Jamal Murray is up for a major extension.??We?re anticipating that we?re probably paying him the supermax,? Booth said recently while discussing the 26-year-old. However, there is one condition to Murray’s supermax contract. He had to make the All-NBA before the proceedings began. Booth sounded really positive about this condition as well. He said, “He?ll probably make All-NBA.? The extension seems fair as well because Murray made major contributions in the Nuggets road to the title.

Will the extension cause any damage to the Nuggets?

It’s not all fairy tale when it comes to giving out huge extension deals. While it will definitely put Murray at an advantage and give him added motivation to give his best, it won’t be all good for the franchise. Offering supermax extensions to any athlete boils down to having a massive impact on the franchise’s salary cap. As for the Nuggets, their GM is well aware of the repercussions but he still believes that Murray should be awarded.

“It?s going to be a hit to our salary cap. But I love seeing people reach their potential when they play the way he can,” Booth said about his star player.
