Damian Lillard and Kay’la Hanson announced their divorce in October last year, just before the season kicked off. Ever since, the two have been involved in a custody battle for their three children, Damian Jr., and twins Kali and Kalii. Dame’s now ex-wife, Kay’la has been fighting for sole custody of their children. The children live in Oregon, Portland with her and only meet Dame during visits.

Despite the ongoing legal procedures, Dame takes his fatherhood seriously and makes an effort to spend quality time with his three children every chance he gets. He recently got the chance to spend time with them, celebrating the twins’ 3rd birthday, and shared a glimpse of these moments on Instagram.

Showing the beautiful moments, Dame shared a heartwarming Instagram story; the short clip is enough to melt anyone’s heart. As the younger twin Kali is playing on a bounce house, Dame scoops her into his arms and says, “We’re going to go get our face paint.” His other two children join him as they walk away for another fun activity. Engulfed in love and joy as he spends quality time with his three precious ones, Dame shared the story with three heart emojis.

We can see from the video that Dame has quite some fun-filled activities laid out to make his babies’ special day a memorable one. When it comes to spending time with his bundles of joy, Dame does not hold back. This is because he rarely gets to do so. His ex-wife had accused him of abandoning the family and neglecting parental duties, demanding sole custody after the divorce. Caught in this mess, Dame doesn’t pass up on any chance to let his children know that he loves them.

Balancing fatherhood and career

The anguish of having to live apart from their children is something only a parent could understand, and Dame is all too familiar with it. He opened up about his situation saying, “That’s probably been the biggest challenge, being away from my kids…Any father or any mother would know that. When you wake up and you are able to be physically present with your kids, there is nothing else that you love more in the world.” The Big Game Dame admits that living away from his children while trying to build a basketball legacy at the same time has been the toughest battle yet.

Despite this, he says, “They probably get tired of me telling ’em I love ’em a hundred times a day on our phone calls and FaceTime. I make sure that they know.” He was able to spend the last Christmas with his children and nothing else could have topped it for the 7X NBA All-Star. It is an ongoing custody battle, and Dame is nothing but optimistic.
