The Los Angeles Lakers are making moves to futureproof their squad for the upcoming season. They recently extended the contract of the Power forward Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers received Vanderbilt as part of the Russell Westbrook deal, including the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz. And he proved himself in the debut match against the Warriors, with the Lakers emerging victorious. And in a squad with stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Vanderbilt seemed to fit in perfectly.

However, in an astonishing turn of events, Vanderbilt’s former Timberwolves teammate warned him before a $48,000,000 deal. The former All-Defensive First team player sent a cryptic message to his former teammate about the deal he was supposed to get later that day. As the NBA world awaited Jarred Vanderbilt’s destiny, the 35-year-old guard made a shocking revelation during his recent Podcast episode.

The story begins with Jarred Vanderbilt, now a prominent player for the Los Angeles Lakers, was offered a hefty four-year, $48,000,000 contract extension. However, just before Vanderbilt received this deal, Patrick Beverley warned him about a contract extension. Beverley and Vanderbilt are former teammates during their time at the Timberwolves. They both had a great chemistry and now share a bond of brotherhood. And as Beverley had also been a part of the Lakers, he tried to help out his brother.

So, out of concern for him, Beverley got up in the morning at 8:18 A.M., and out of nowhere, he sent a message to Vanderbilt saying, Do not sign an extension. The most surprising part is Vanderbilt got the contract extension offer on that day only. Beverley spoke about this on his podcast and did not spare any details. He said, “Do not sign an extension, trust me. Hoop, stay in shape, have fun. I repeat, Do not sign an extension“. Vanderbilt replied to him, saying, “Appreciate the gang. Why do you think it is better to wait?”

At the heart of Beverley’s advice, there was only one assumption. As per him, if Vanderbilt waited and tested the free agency waters, he would have greater negotiating power and access to better possibilities. Beverley’s claim is simple: “You sign an extension, you get your worth. You sign as a free agent, you get overpaid.”

Jarred Vanderbilt, recognized for his defensive grit and flexibility, agreed to terms with the Lakers on a long-term contract deal. The 4-year, $48 million contract, which includes a player option in the fourth year, honors Vanderbilt’s crucial services as a defensive pillar. Vanderbilt’s ability to guard elite scorers and his 7.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in the regular season, make this contract an acknowledgment of his value to the Lakers’ squad. However, Beverley claimed that “For what he does, he should be overpaid. If he would have waited, we’re talking ’bout four-year, $60 million; four-year $65 million.”

Beverley, who supported his friend’s choice, couldn’t help but express his surprise. He said, “But it’s also hard to turn down $48 million. And then, as soon as I hear him sign it, I call him, Yeah, gang, why the f**k you sign that da*n deal?” To which Vanderbilt replied, “Man you know I cannot turn down $50 million”.
