After sitting out the preseason opener, King James and Austin Reaves both decided to put up a show of the Las Vegas city. The T-Mobile Arena saw LeBron James and Austin Reaves play their first preseason game on Monday night. Ahead of their star performance, Reaves revealed their strategy to overcome their biggest weakness from last season.

Austin Reaves reveals Lakers’ biggest weakness last season

The Lakers lost their first preseason opener sans James and Reaves. However, the two finally came to the team’s rescue to lead the team to victory in the second contest. The Lakers are in a win-now mentality this season, and therefore the stars are making major changes in their game to adjust to the modern NBA standards. They are implementing more three-point shots in their game this season.

During a post-game interview, the journalist pointed out the new developments in the Lakers’ play style. The 25-year-old spoke about their shortcomings from last season that they are trying to prevail over. “I think we just have a team full of guys that can shoot the ball, and you know that goes a long way as you see what Golden State’s done in the last 10 or so years. Being able to space the floor like that was kind of one of our weaknesses last year,” said Austin Reaves.

In the last decade, the sport of basketball underwent a huge change. The play style used to be more pick-and-roll focused. However, the focus has shifted towards spacing and opening the floor. And the pioneer of this revolution is none other than three-point king Stephen Curry. The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors dynasty weaponized the three-point shot and won a record-breaking 73 games in the regular season. It looks like the Lakers are taking some inspiration from Stephen Curry and Co.

Will Lakers address their shortcomings?

While addressing the three-point revolution orchestrated by the Stephen Curry-led Warriors, Reaves revealed the teams’ plans to address their weaknesses in this preseason. This is so they can enter the postseason geared up to win it all. He added that they have a lot of players like James and Anthony Davis who play really well around the rim. Therefore, having more people who can shoot long-range shots will diversify the team’s portfolio even further.

Last game, Reaves shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, while Cam Thomas also added a flurry of three-point shots. The next matchup between the GSW and Lakers is definitely something to look forward to.
