Like it has been over the past few years, the persistent critiques over the All-Star game continued. Yes, it made history. For the first time, a team had scored over 200 points. However, it wasn’t because the East unleashed a genius offense or outplayed the West. There was simply no contesting from the defense of either side.

Over the years, the All-Star game has become more of an exhibition game where the best players play a casual game of basketball. There is no signs of them trying to be competitive. It has been reduced to a showcase event where NBA stars play the game for the most naive reason – to have fun.

It has strayed away from what it traditionally used to be – a warfare between the best players of both conferences. Many are wondering how it can go back to the classic. However, Anthony Edwards feels the mentality of players regarding the event will prevent it from being an intense basketball game.

Anthony Edwards sees the All-Star weekend as a break

Edwards is one of the most promising superstars in the NBA. He is the most influential star responsible for the rise of the Minnesota Timberwolves. His competitive fire and old skool mentality are some of the reasons he is adored by fans. ANT is one of the few remaining stars in the league who advocated for others to play all 82 games. In fact, he spoke with disdain when referring to load management last year.

It seems his vintage mindset doesn’t extend to the All-Star game.

At the post-game press conference for the All-Star game, which the East won 211-186, Edwards was questioned about the lack of competitiveness during the game. Revealing his perspective of the All-Star game, the Timberwolves guard said he never perceived it to be competitive. And there is a reason for this.

“I think for me it’s the All-Star game so I don’t think I will ever look at it like being super competitive. It’s always fun. But I don’t know what they can do to make it more competitive. I don’t know. It’s a break so I don’t think anybody wants to compete,” he told the reporters.

If we go by the description, it is indeed called the All-Star break. NBA superstars approach the weekend as a momentary escape from the highly competitive regular season games they have played tirelessly. In the modern age, it’s just a game to express yourself and try to wildest of things. That’s their way to satisfy the fans.

However, it hasn’t worked. The NBA universe wants to see the best against the best in a basketball game at full throttle. That’s how the legends did it. In fact, Larry Bird prior to the exhibition game urged the stars to “play hard”. With such an outlook, it is almost impossible for the game to return back to its prime age.
