After the Western Conference Finals loss last season, the Los Angeles Lakers were shaken up. During the press conference, a serious LeBron James entertained the notion of retiring. The whispers continued for months, while the organization only hoped for the best. Fortunately, during the ESPYs this year, James enthusiastically announced he would return to play. That brought some stability to their plans. And now, they want to move ahead and start thinking of an era post-James.

That begins with catering to the organization’s torch-bearer star, Anthony Davis. Recently, a panel of ESPN experts decoded how the Lakers could tempt him with a hefty extension.

There have been contrasting times relating to AD. There was a point Laker Nation wanted nothing to do with him. This whirlpool stirred due to his troubled history of staying healthy. However, the playoffs resurged his importance in the chronicles of Laker history. Davis elevated his game on both ends of the floor, even being a terror as a shot blocker.

They were shades of his legendary run during the 2020 playoffs, a year the Purple and Gold won their 17th title. Since the offseason began, fans have wondered how the Lakers will approach Anthony Davis. There was a point he was involved in trade talks. But now it seems he is an indispensable star among their ranks.

Seemingly enjoying his prime, Davis is expected to take over the keys of the franchise from LeBron James. The King will enter his final year next season, after which the future is oblivious. Likewise, the responsibilities will rest on Anthony Davis’ shoulders. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Lakers will lean towards giving him a $170 million extension.

“The Lakers can give him three years and a 170 million dollar extension more in his contract which would put him under contract for a total of five years. The two he has got left, and three more taking him basically to the edge of his prime, if not past it,” said Windhorst.

The NBA insider believes the Los Angeles Lakers need to begin ‘succession planning’ on when James does eventually retire. The frontrunner to takeover is unsurprisingly Anthony Davis. Yes, there are constant concerns over his health. But it’s undeniable that he is a decisive force for the franchise.

The Brow is a perennial threat as a rim protector. It was on display during the playoffs where rivals thought twice before challenging Davis. Apart from his potency on defense, the 30-year-old is an elite offensive talent. Davis can be effective with his mesmerizing footwork in the post and is also a threat from the mid-range.
