Luka Doncic has established himself as one of the most unstoppable offensive forces in the league right now. His career in the NBA has been nothing short of incredible. The Slovenian phenom registers an average of 33.4 PPG on 50.1% shooting and has broken numerous records in just his fifth year in the league. The Mavericks guard has joined the likes of LeBron James as the only player to score 9,000 points and 2,500 assists before turning 25. And now he is rumored to be the only player in NBA history to rope in a whopping $70 million salary.

However, there is another record that he is eyeing, contingent on earning All-Star status in the 2023-24 season.

According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, the 4-time NBA All-Star is set to be eligible for a five-year supermax extension, projected at $318 million. However, he can only ink the supermax contract if he makes the All-NBA team in the 2023-24 season. Importantly, the eye-popping numbers could even surge to $367.5 million, given the salary cap increases to 10% over the next three years.

Marks also points out that he could not seal the deal in 2024 due to his six years of service. However, he would have fulfilled the criteria, i.e., two All-NBA selections, in the last three years. So, that would make him eligible to ink the extension in 2025, effective from the 2026-27 season. Even though his stint with Team Slovenia ended in dismay, his basketball IQ, and sharpshooting prowess were on full display during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. There is a possibility that if he leads the Dallas Mavericks to title contention, he might be considered underpaid.

Other players joining Luka Doncic on the list

Another player in line for a $318 million deal would be Jaren Jackson Jr. The possibility hinges on the Memphis Grizzlies forward earning the Defensive Player of the Year honors once again or if he is named All-NBA. He can ink a five-year, $318 million extension in the 2025 offseason, kicking in 2026-27.

Both Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray would be eligible to seal a five-year, $303 million extension next offseason, contingent on earning an All-NBA in 2023-24. Sacramento Kings breakout star De’Aaron Fox is eligible to sign a two-year, $97 million extension until 23rd October. However, if he makes it to the All-NBA team this season, he would qualify to ink a four-year, $245 million extension next offseason and a five-year supermax extension in the 2025 offseason.

Currently, Luka Doncic is making just over $40 million annually. However, if he earns the All-NBA honors, he would be eligible for a monstrous extension in 2025. It is noteworthy that if his unmatchable skills and talent elevate the Mavs to title contention, he might be viewed as under-compensated.
