The Philadelphia 76ers have not had anything go their way this year. The franchise that boasts of two championships has not made it to the NBA Finals since 2001. In a bid to get themselves back into the Finals, the Sixers landed James Harden. However, his stint with the franchise also ended in dismay. After two consecutive second round playoff exits, Harden requested a trade out of the franchise. Now, the only superstar remaining in Philadelphia is the reigning MVP, Joel Embiid.

The Sixers have not been able to avoid their fate for the past 3 seasons. Since 2019, the team has been eliminated in the Eastern Conference Semifinals 4 times, with three of them happening consecutively. Despite being one of the strongest franchises in the league, the Sixers have not been able to make a push for the championship. This has raised several questions regarding the future of the franchise. One such is regarding one of their topmost executive.

James Harden has been openly ring chasing for the past few years. Joining forces with one of the most dominant centers in the league, Joel Embiid seemed like the best way to pursue his quest for a title. However, despite having an MVP season, The Process’ failure to lead the team past the second round again prompted the 33 year old to make yet another trade request.

Rumors of the 10 time All Star’s trade destination have been rampant throughout this offseason. While some fans believe he will end up on the Los Angeles Clippers roster, some believe he will remain with the Sixers. With the uncertainty in the air, 29 year old Embiid will have a huge responsibility on his shoulders entering the next season. However, the Sixers’ President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey will have a similar responsibility.

Morey has served the Sixers front office since 2020. His stint has seen three second round exits so far, despite some significant front office moves. Instead of repeating his heroics of landing James Harden as a Sixers executive, the franchise have not seen the success they were looking for. This raised concerns regarding his future with the franchise.

Morey could be shown the door

Daryl Morey is one of the most reputed executives in the NBA currently. With a whopping $10M monthly salary, it is clear that Morey is one of the most coveted executives in the league. One of his legendary moves was to acquire James Harden as a Houston Rockets executive which earned major acclaim. However, his stint with the Sixers could be in jeopardy after their disappointing stretch.

The Sixers have been highly volatile since their second round exit in 2022-23 season. They first let go of their tenured head coach, Doc Rivers. Following that came Harden’s trade request. Now, with nobody left to blame in case they fail to make the Finals yet again this season, the attention may turn to the Morey. Keith Pompey shared this very concern recently.

The problem that Daryl Morey faces is before you had Doc Rivers, who you could blame, you could blame “The Process,” you could blame other people. Right now, all eyes are on Morey … if they don’t get out of the second round, he’s going to take the blame … He could be the guy that goes,” he said.

After this statement, it is clear that the members of the Sixers franchise are all walking on thin ice. The pressure to make a championship run in the upcoming season is higher than ever. With Morey potentially being next in line, he would look to make some major front office moves to further strengthen their case for a legitimate championship run. However, a lot will depend on “The Process” Joel Embiid’s performance.
