The FIBA World Cup is approaching soon and the excitement is palpable. The Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia will co-host this year’s World Cup. It will take place from August 25 to September 10. The USA team is already generating hype as one of the top contenders for the championship. Their previous World Cup victory came in 2014. And this year’s team has their sights set on bringing the trophy back home.

However, a 24 YO NBA player dubbed as the ‘Villain’ feels he was snubbed. He revealed his aspirations of following in his idol, Steve Nash’s footsteps.

NBA’s ‘Villain’ desires to be on the USA roster

Dubbed as being the league’s villain by critics, Trae Young recently appeared on an episode of ‘Gil’s Arena’. During his appearance, he expressed his desire to follow in Steve Nash’s footsteps. Steve Nash made his international debut for Canada at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was an important member of Canada’s basketball team, displaying great playmaking talents and leadership on the court. Young wishes to represent the United States on the world basketball scene.

However, while Trae Young is well-known for his scoring and playmaking abilities, he has stated a desire to contribute in a different way if given the opportunity to wear the Team USA jersey.

He said, I definitely want to. It’s up to them if they want me to“.

Young continued, “I would love to play with guys and show off my passing even more and not have to go out and score a lot and just be there if they need me. I’d be happy to, obviously. But I respect the OGs and understand you have to take your turn.  But I believe I should be on there“.

However, this is not the first time he is being snubbed.

Trae Young took things into his own hands

Trae Young displayed his excellent skills on the floor the previous season, averaging 26.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 10.2 assists across 73 games. And despite being a two-time All-Star, he has been passed over in previous drafts. This marks the second time he’s been left off of the roster.

The USA team wanted a player to replace Bradley Beal in 2020. Despite his outstanding performance during the NBA season, the selection committee chose another candidate. During his exit interview with the Hawks this past April, Young took matters into his own hands. He made a strong pitch for a spot on Team USA’s roster. However, the selection committee chose to pass on him.
