The NBA All-Star weekend is the annual celebration of sustained brilliance throughout the season. While fan votes are most significant at 50%, the media and fellow peers in the league hold 25% each. This might seem fair, but this system has been complicit in excluding some well-deserved players over the years. Many fans and other veterans around the league think that this year Trae Young‘s exclusion from the list is a glaring omission, citing his averages this season. Draymond Green is among those who voiced his opinion in Young’s favor.

In the most recent episode of his podcast The Draymond Green Show, he proceeded to discuss the ‘double standards’ in the All-Star voting, rightly pointing out that the league depends on player’s statistics. Considering that fact, Young’s snub feels misguided at best. “They say a lot of coaches or a lot of people don’t appreciate Trey’s style of play. You know, so he’d be voted in by the coaches, and they don’t appreciate his style of play or how he competes on the defensive end or whatever. I’ll tell you what, guarding Trey Young is hell,” said Green.

He elaborates on Young’s play style further saying, “The way he uses his live threats, the way he uses the guys around him, he’s great in the pick and roll, he’s super fast obviously, we know he can shoot the blood out the ball. He gets in between, you know, the rim, that kind of mid-range area, kind of floaters, good finishing around the rim, all of that.” So, averaging 27 points and 10.9 assists the 25-year-old stands tall in the eyes of Green.

Despite securing almost 2.7 million votes, Trae had come up short in the other voting. However, being lionized by the Former Defensive Players of the Year has to account for something. However, what could be the possible reasons for skipping out on Young?

Diving deeper into Trae Young’s snub

One obvious reason for his omission could be the fact that his team is in an underwhelming position in the East at the moment. The  Atlanta Hawks currently sit at the 10th position, with 22 wins and 27 losses, barely squeezing into the Play-in spot. That can be cited as a major reason for his exclusion. However, that argument doesn’t hold much water as LeBron James and AD both are in the Rooster despite the Lakers being horrible all season, as Green points out later in the clip.

Another major aspect that Dray highlights is if only team success was the determining factor for an all-star selection, Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox should have both in the rooster, as the Kings are among the top seeds in the West. In the end, Green hopes Young can still make it in the East, as both Joel Embiid and Julius Randle are out due to injury and won’t make it by All-Star weekend.
