Jason Richards, a name linked with Davidson College basketball supremacy, had an amazing basketball career. He was key in the Wildcats’ success as captain of the 2008 Cinderella squad. He guided his team to three Southern Conference crowns and three NCAA Tournament invites, including the epic 2008 Elite Eight run. During this span, the entire country became aware of Richards’ exceptional playmaking skills.

His exceptional ability to pass the ball resulted in season and single-game records for assists (293) and (19). They even named Richards to the NCAA All-Regional Team in appreciation of his remarkable performance, solidifying his title as one of the finest playmakers in college basketball. They were a perfect match that complimented each other’s abilities on the basketball court. However, destiny had its own plan for these pals. Davidson, the ultimate underdog, took on Kansas, the No. 1 seed at the moment. With only 16 seconds remaining and Kansas leading 57-59, the dreams of a country were on Curry’s shoulders. But Kansas, well aware of Curry’s talent, double-teamed him, forcing him to pass the ball.

The ball made its way to Davidson’s senior point guard, Jason Richards, during that heartbreaking NCAA Tournament moment. Richards, entrusted with the team’s fate, had a single shot to take Davidson to the coveted Final Four. In a tragic twist of fate, he missed that critical shot, which he still regrets to this day. In Curry’s documentary “Underrated,” Richards acknowledged the severity of his feelings, saying, “It really didn’t hit me till the locker room. It’s like the family, you know… That’s the last thing you don’t wanna do is let your teammate down.”
