NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been eyeing the potential expansion of the league for many years. There have been talks about adding new teams to the competition, but there is still no set timeline for when that will happen. Two cities that are on top of Silver’s list in consideration for expansion are Seattle and Las Vegas. Even 4-time Champion LeBron James has been an advocate for bringing a team to Las Vegas for a long time.

But Adam Silver’s latest comments on a possible expansion have caused a stir in the NBA. However, King James remains unbothered by the NBA Commissioner’s comments and has kept his Vegas dream alive.

LeBron James is in Las Vegas to play in the semi-final of the in-season tournament against the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow. While the fans await the Vegas showdown, King James talked about a potential league expansion in Sin City. “It’s a sports town. Hopefully, I can bring my franchise here one day.” LeBron has been vocal about wanting to own a team in Vegas for years. The Lakers superstar first revealed his Vegas dream during an episode of his show The Shop: Uninterrupted.

LeBron’s comments come hours after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver halted the expansion talks for now during his appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio. Silver revealed that there are many players, former and current, and several other wealthy people, who have expressed their interest in owning a franchise in Vegas.

But the NBA Commissioner has told them there is currently no process in place. Adam Silver does not want people to get ahead of themselves as the NBA is still waiting to sign their new media deals. The league’s current national deals with ABC, ESPN, and TNT go through the end of next season, and Silver can only consider expansion after he understands the economy of the new deal.

Las Vegas is a great sports market for the NBA

Adam Silver also revealed if the NBA goes through with the expansion, Las Vegas and Seattle will be the top two cities in consideration. Even though Vegas is wildly popular for partying and gambling, they are starting to gain a reputation of becoming the newest sports mecca. Vegas has hosted some of the biggest boxing and UFC fights in history. The city also has many successful sports teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders and WNBA’s own Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces have dominated the WNBA recently and even won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. NBA understands the potential in the Las Vegas market. That is why they conduct the summer league in Vegas, and now they have added the semi-final and final of the in-season tournament to the list of NBA events in Sin City.
