Mutua Madrid Open 2021: Latest News, Results and Records

Mutua Madrid Open is one of the three ATP Masters 1000 tournaments held on clay. But it is one of the few tournaments to be an ATP Masters 1000 event as well as a WTA 1000 tournament.

The 2021 Mutua Madrid Open will be the 19th edition of the event as an ATP event and the 12th event as a WTA event. It is played on the clay courts of La Caja Magica in Manzanares Park Tennis Center, Madrid, Spain.

The tournament was first held in 2002 and later in 2009 was expanded to an ATP and WTA tournament. But in 2020 the tournament was canceled because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Like other ATP and WTA events, Madrid Open also follows the best of three sets rule. It is usually held in the first week of May and is closely followed by the Italian Open.

The current men's singles champ is Novak Djokovic. He had defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in 2019. The women's singles champion is Kiki Bertens, who defeated Simona Halep in 2019.

History and Records

Since the tournament began in the early 2000s, it coincided with the rise of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and later Andy Murray as well. Thus out of the 18 editions of the ATP event, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray have won a combined 13 titles.
