About Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs: 2024 Roster, Players, Schedule, Super Bowl Wins and More

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Chiefs are one of the oldest professional American football teams, that compete in the AFC West division. They ply their trade in that division alongside Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers, and Las Vegas Raiders. They are known for thier passionate fan base, storied history and a powerhouse team, who has recently won back-to-back Super Bowls. Talking about thier fan base, the team has over 2.56 million fans worldwide.

What's the Chiefs history?

The Kansas City Chiefs originated a few miles to the South in the state of Texas, where they joined the AFC in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by Founder Lamar Hunt. The franchise played in the AFL for 3 seasons before relocating to Kansas City for the 1963 AFL season, renaming themselves - The Kansas City Chiefs.

The unit won the AFL Championship in their last season at Dallas. They repeated the feat twice (1966 and 1969) in the AFL era in Kansas. On the 2nd occasion, they clinched the Super Bowl by beating the Minnesota Vikings. However, soon after that, the team started to have a major downfall, and as a result, they were arguably considered as losers. After the Super Bowl win, the AFL and NFL merged, and the Chiefs struggled massively in the new league. From 1970 to 1990, the franchise was able to just make two playoff appearances.

Additionally, the team made many poor decisions like cutting Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud under coach Marv Levy. Then again, the Chiefs had the chance to draft either Jim Kelly or Dan Marino, the HOF quarterbacks. But the team failed and picked Todd Blackledge who only threw for 29 TDs in the league. Such type of mistakes continued until they hired GM Carl Peterson and coach Marty Schottenheimer who later drafted two biggest weapons for the Chiefs' defense - Neil Smith (1988) and Derek Thomas (1999). With the help of them, the franchise reached to the playoffs for six straight seasons (1990-1995).

Then after some more years of topsy-turvy eras, the Chiefs changed their head coach, firing Romeo Crennel and bringing in Andy Reid, who later drafted players like Alex Smith and Travis Kelce. Although the team showed some improvement, thier lack of playoff appearances were still irking. The team then selected Tyreek Hill and Chris Jones in 2016, and despite getting first round bye in the playoffs, they again lost. This time, before being fired, GM John Dorsey picked Texas Tech QB, Patrick Mahomes. With Mahomes & Reid's combo coming into play, the Chiefs saw a major overhaul in their performances and records. And the rest is history, as the team have won three Super Bowl by now after the duo's entry. They are now looking for their 3-peat in 2025!

Kansas City Chiefs Logo?

Despite moving, the Chiefs have retained their jersey colors and still play football in red and white. The Kansas City Chiefs' first logo featured a cowboy with a gun in his right hand and a football in his left. The background was the state of Texas.

When the franchise moved North to Kansas City, the man was replaced by an individual in yellow headgear, and a tomahawk replaced the gun?

The logo remained till the 1972 season before the franchise shook things up. They introduced an arrowhead logo in keeping with their stadium, the Arrowhead Stadium. The logo had a black border and featured the letters. KC in red with a white background.

Lamar Hunt's design which was sketched on a napkin has remained on the jersey for nearly half a century and is synonymous with the franchise.

Owner Achievements

Lamar Hunt founded the Kansas City Chiefs and served as the owner until his demise in 2006. This is the man who first used the term "Super Bowl" for the AFC vs NFC season-ending clash. His wife Norma Hunt has attended every Super Bowl game and was present on the sidelines for both of the Kansas City Chiefs' triumphs.

The team's operations are handled by her son Clark Hunt, who oversaw the end of an unfortunate streak. In 2016, the Kansas City Chiefs blanked Houston Texans 30-0 to advance to the 2015 Divisional Playoffs. The win ended the team's 22-year wait for a playoff win.

The 8-game losing streak from their triumph against Houston Oilers on January 16, 1994, right until their glorious win at the NRG Field on January 9, 2016.

While the team didn't build on this and lost their next game, it showed that the Hunt family had the right vision for the future.

The defending champions put up a 14-2 record in 2020 and rounded out the regular season with a first-place finish in the AFC West.

Kansas City Chiefs Achievements

The Kansas City Chiefs have won 4 Super Bowl titles. The first came in the 4th NFL season with quarterback Len Dawson claiming the MVP trophy.

After 50 years and almost a generation later, the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl. Here it appeared they would fall at the final hurdle in 2020. However, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes had other ideas and dominated the San Francisco 49ers to snatch the unlikeliest of victories from the jaws of defeat 31-20.

Then, Kansas City Chiefs were successful to clinch their Super Bowl Champions' status in 2023. They defeated the Eagles to win the title by 38-35.

And then again under Andy Reid, in 2023 season, the Chiefs were aiming to become the first team to defend a Super Bowl since the New England Patriots' successful effort in 2005. And they successfully achieved that. They defeated the 49ers once again in 2024 to win the Super Bowl LVIII in 2024 with 25-22 in an overtime game.

Besides this, the franchise has won 16 Divisional Titles (eight straight AFC West titles) and 4 Conference Championships and reached the Playoffs 25 times.

The Patrick Mahomes era

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to be a force to reckon with for many seasons. They are on their way to becoming a dynasty which in retrospect kicked off in 2017. This was when the franchise elected to make Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes their top draft pick at 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.

After a year on the sidelines, behind Alex Smith, Mahomes claimed the starter's role. He threw a combination of 5,000 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes en route to the NFL MVP in 2018.

They fell in the conference championship game to the eventual Super Bowl winners, the New England Patriots.

A year later, Mahomes lived up to lofty expectations. Though he couldn't secure back-to-back MVP awards, he showed the league that they should count the Chiefs out at their own risk.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback orchestrated a series of comebacks in the post-season to help get the Vincent Lombardi Trophy back to Missouri after half a century.

He claimed the Super Bowl MVP for his efforts and was rewarded with a bumper contract. The Chiefs quarterback is set to lead 'The Legion of Zoom' for a considerable amount of time. He now boasts three Super Bowl trophies in his hand.

Now, Mahomes is heading towards the 2025 Super Bowl, to make a 3-peat this time!
