In a historic match, Coco Gauff emerged victorious against her Belarusian opponent Aryna Sabalenka to win the 2023 US Open Crown. A sell-out crowd of 28,143 at Arthur Ashe Stadium saw the 19-year-old Gauff grab her maiden Grand Slam title. Despite a poor start to her game on the court, losing the first set, she turned the match in her favor midway through the second set.

Joining her to celebrate this historic and terrific feat were her parents, some of the biggest celebrities, and of course, a loud and cheerful Arthur Ashe Stadium, filled to the brim. She also became the third American teenager to win the US Open. Following in the footsteps of tennis legend Serena Williams who did the same in 1999. As most would ponder deeply about the results of this match, there was one person who was certain of Gauff’s victory.

Mike Tyson is a big fan of Coco Gauff

Weeks ahead of her big match against Sabalenka, the Florida-origin tennis player Gauff found immense support in boxing’s very own legend, Mike Tyson. ‘Iron Mike’ in a candid conversation revealed the reasons why he sided with Gauff. The interviewer asked Mike what according to him was the best attribute of the tennis player. The former heavyweight boxer stated that her “perseverance” would make her a “big-time champion”.

Explaining the reasons why he thinks Gauff could make a big impact in the sport, Mike said, “She’s a young girl, she has perseverance, she continues on, she doesn’t get discouraged.” Further predicting her victory in the tournament, the fighter stated, She’s going to be a big-time champion.

A big moment for Gauff: Obama and Tyson congratulate her

After making history on the tennis court, Coco Gauff immediately became the talk of the town. Her impressive performance against Sabalenka further got her a grand slam title on her home soil. But what it also did was make her a name now uttered by the whos-who of the country. After having expressed his  support for Gauff, Mike Tyson made sure he was in attendance at her career-defining match. However, joining him by the courtside was the former President of the US Barrack Obama.

Taking to social media, the president congratulated her for ground-breaking victory. He said, “Congratulations to US Open champion, @CocoGauff! We couldn’t be prouder of you on and off the court – and we know the best is yet to come.” He was further joined by his wife who said, “So proud of you, @CocoGauff! Your hard work and grit was on display throughout this tournament. This is your moment!” 

But one person who wished her did not surprise folks at all. It was her ardent supporter, Mike Tyson. He said, “Coco!!! @CocoGauff You did it! America and the world are celebrating! Congrats! #USOpen.”

Today, the world rejoices with the 17-year-old’s inspirational journey to reach this feat.
