Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce fought on November 28, 2020. The fight was highly anticipated. Many bet on Dubois to win. However, Joyce’s experience and jab changed the game. In the 10th round, Joyce’s left hand knocked out Dubois. Dubois took a knee, and the referee counted to ten. His left eye suffered severe injury. He chose to quit. Joyce controlled the fight’s pace with his strong jabs. Dubois later admitted Joyce’s jabs were accurate, and he couldn’t see.

Joe Joyce is a boxer who has tasted both success and failure. However, for him, the journey to a title shot has been anything but straightforward. Joyce wanted Dubois to beat Usyk. A win would set up a Joyce-Dubois rematch for titles. Also, Joyce lost an optional fight with Zhilei Zhang, after which he immediately triggered the rematch clause. Joyce now believes his career time is running out and wants a title shot soon.

While expressing his dissatisfaction, Joyce said to Boxing Scene, “It was frustrating that it was the guy I beat convincingly that got the shot before me. And it bothers me that I was once the WBA gold (champion) and paid the sanctioning fees, and then I was completely out of that (mix).”

He explained more about the issue, saying, “That’s a route I could’ve taken, but I did the WBO route and I’m in that position again. But to have to lose to Zhang, when I was so close and I could’ve just waited and took a different shot, it was quite a hard time and lesson to learn.” He also expressed his reasons for triggering the rematch clause immediately. As he said, “I don’t really have time to piece my way back another way, so I have to.”
