Frank Martin and Shakur Stevenson have been stirring up headlines since their fight debacle. As news had it, Stevenson first wanted to fight Devin Haney but it didn’t happen. Then, Frank Martin agreed to fight Stevenson but later backed out, sparking rumors that he wanted to protect his undefeated record. Now, Stevenson is set to fight Edwin De Los Santos, a boxer with a 16-1 record. But ever since the fight’s cancellation, Martin and Stevenson’s back-and-forth allegations against each other have not stopped.

However, later ‘Sugar’ accused Martin of unfair purse split negotiations. Now, as both opponents are set on separate ventures, new developments have happened. This is because Martin has expressed his opinion on the matter in a recent interview with Queens of the Ring. According to Martin, he had agreed to fight Shakur verbally. However, something happened that changed his mind. Moreover, he claimed his demands were justifiable.

Frank Martin said he initially agreed to fight Shakur Stevenson verbally. However, he changed his mind after learning about the money involved. He felt the offer was not financially lucrative, especially after considering taxes and training fees. Martin believed his request for more money was reasonable compared to what Stevenson would earn. He denied Stevenson’s claim that he wanted a 50/50 purse split, calling it untrue. The fight didn’t happen because of financial disagreements.

As he said in the interview, “Verbally I agreed to it. But I didn’t ever know what the money was. I figured out what that money was and I weren’t cool with it, I wanted more… $1 million ain’t no f***ing $1 million once you take out taxes, training fees… What I was asking for wasn’t outrageous. For what he was getting paid, what I asked for was reasonable. The fight could’ve happened, it’s all about the money. That [Shakur saying I asked for 50/50] is cap.”

To understand this in detail, we need to revisit the course of events that transpired this happening.

Where it all started: ‘Sugar’ hurls verbal slurs at Martin

In a tweet by sports journalist Michael Benson, ‘Sugar’ Stevenson openly challenged Martin’s boxing credentials. This came after failed talks for a fight between Stevenson and Martin. Stevenson said Martin demanded an equal purse split, which he found ridiculous given Martin’s  boxing record.

Moreover, Stevenson didn’t mince words, calling Martin out for his unreasonable demands. He said Martin wanted a 50/50 split despite having no significant achievements in boxing. As Stevenson said, “He’s p***y, he’s a b*tch. That n***a’s a straight b*tch. I’ve never seen nobody more b*tch-made than Frank Martin. Frank Martin is the most b*tchest n***a in the world. This man sat there in the DMs and tried to act like [the offer wasn’t] 25%, but it is. He wanted 50/50 or he’s not fighting me. That don’t make sense. He’s never done nothing in the sport of boxing. He’s a b*tch.”
