George Kambosos Jr just made a successful return against Maxi Hughes by winning the IBO world Lightweight title by a majority decision. For most of the fight, Kambosos Jr and Maxi Hughes relied upon basic punches and fought patiently. In round 2, while Kambosos Jr caught Hughes with a beautiful straight hand, Hughes hit the former with an elbow. However, Kambosos Jr stayed calm, ceaselessly measured the distance between himself and Hughes, and avoided unnecessary risks.

However, the decision of the fight disappointed a number of fans. As per the scorecards, two judges scored the bout in favor of Kambosos Jr. While on David Sutherland’s scorecard, the fight was a draw, Gerald Ritter and Josef Mason scored the contest 115-113 and 117-111 respectively. After the official announcement, several fans started booing Kambosos Jr while he was still inside the ring.

While the scores shocked a number of fans, the ringside commentator stated that Josef Mason “should be on the Christmas card list for George Kambosos with that 117 to 111“. On being asked about the mixed reaction he received, Kambosos declared that contrary to Hughes’s “couple good rounds“, he won “the majority of the rounds“. “He had a couple [of] good rounds but a couple [of] good rounds don’t win you the fight. We won the majority of the rounds,” declared Kambosos Jr.  However, a number of fans felt otherwise.

According to one fan, it was “a total embarrassment“.

Meanwhile, given his performance tonight, one wondered how Kambososs Jr beat Teofimo Lopez.

On the other hand, a fan wrote, “Won’t be watching anymore what a disgrace“.

Ahead of his fight with Hughes, Kambosos Jr reiterated his desire to fight Gervonta Davis. However, after his latest victory, the Australian boxer opted for Shakur Stevenson and Vasyl Lomachenko.
