“We Were Suppose[d] to Fight Like 3 Times”: Deontay Wilder Reveals Why Oleksandr Usyk Didn’t Accept His Fight Proposal

Ahead of the crossover fight with Francis Ngannou, Tyson Fury rattled the world as he disclosed signing a deal with Oleksandr Usyk. Following this revelation, it was even announced that Fury vs. Usyk would take place on the 23rd of December, 2023. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Ngannou injured ‘The Gypsy King’ in the ‘Battle of the Baddest’. As a result, it is now unfeasible for the WBC heavyweight champion to face ‘The Cat’ in December.

At this, during an interaction with Reuters, Usyk revealed the bout could potentially take place in February 2024. Following this assertion, as ES News pursued Deontay Wilder‘s opinion, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ revealed he was supposed to face Usyk multiple times. However, here is why the Ukrainian boxer refused a bout against Deontay.

Ahead of Fury vs. Usyk, reporter Elie Seckbach asked Wilder what he thought about a potential fight against ‘The Cat’. In his reply, the 38-year-old mentioned that Usyk would not want to face him. At this, on being asked whether or not he pursued a match with Usyk, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ answered in the affirmative. In doing so, he claimed Usyk was afraid of Wilder’s power.

“We were supposed to fight like three times. The world don’t know this though but the business of boxing [does],” said Wilder. “If you go back to one of my fights, he was supposed to be in that. He didn’t come,” he added.

“I understand why guys don’t want to risk fighting me. I understand that I have the ultimate power,” Wilder, who wishes to hold a title in the UFC, casually declared. In addition, Wilder confidently said, “I can get rid of anybody at any given time. Just wish these guys would come forward and be like in this place.” Following this declaration, the 38-year-old commented on the potential outcome of Fury vs. Usyk.

Given their resumes, it is hard for Wilder to pick a winner ahead of the fight in February. In his opinion, it could go either way. While Wilder has fought Fury and understands Usyk is averse to testing his power, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ feels one must watch the fight. “Anybody can win at any given time. You know what I mean? So, you just have to witness it, see it happen,” he said.
