WBC President Comes Clean on Mistake Made While Announcing Devin Haney’s Doping Test Results Ahead of Regis Prograis Fight

Devin Haney will be going up the weights to meet Regis Prograis in the super lightweight class. The fight drawn up for December 9th will take its course at the Chase Centre in San Fransisco. The clash sees the light of the day after a long battle of negotiations ever since its inception. First scheduled for the 28th of October, the date fell through given its clash with the coveted Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou.

Now on a date finalized, and the show back on the road, the official proceedings leading to the WBC clash have begun. All set to challenge the title at super lightweight, Haney took up the customary drug test. With multiple fighters testing positive for the test lately, the realm keenly awaited for his results. However, when it did arrive, the WBC president made a blunder that might have raised some serious concerns about the fighter.

With a month or so left for the big San Francisco, the first round of VADA drug tests has taken place. The WBC has stringent rules when it comes to testing their fighters for the use of performance enhancers. A test taken now, the fighters will have to mostly undergo the tests just before the fight and post it. While for the initial testing, ‘The Dream’ Haney tested negative for the test, a wrong idea might have raised some alarm among fans.

Initially, while announcing Haney’s test results on social media, Sulaiman said, “We have busted received report from @Vada_Testing from @Realdevinhaney with a negative result from the protocol leading up to his blockbuster fight vs @RPrograis.” While the latter half of the post did clarify that the fighter had tested negative, the word ‘busted’ in the first half confused fans.

However, hours later, the president issued a clarification in the same context. He said, “I am sorry for the confusion that the spell check created as I wrote this post …. I have no idea how the word busted appeared instead of JUST ….. will be more careful before hitting send !”

Shakur Stevenson still hopes for ‘The Dream’ Fight

Prior to his fight against ‘Rougarou’ being announced, Haney remained unsure about him retaining himself in the lightweight division. After his fight against Vasyl Lomachenko this year, he was mandated to defend his titles against Shakur Stevenson. While the latter was all set for the matchup against Haney, the former contemplated if he would defend his titles or go up the weights to challenge Progrias. After multiple deadlines from the WBC, he chose to challenge Prograis.

Now, after having lost the opportunity for the big fight, a snubbed ‘Sugar’ lashed out at Haney. However, months later, Stevenson seemed to have toned his anger down. But his yearning to fight Haney remains. Explaining it further, the fighter said, “It ain’t really a hope, it’s ‘I dare him,’ like I dare him to come back to 135 [lbs.] and try me,” Stevenson added, “Like I pray that that’s what he plans on doing and I can show the world I’m the truth.”

With Haney’s fight against Prograis on the horizon, the boxing realm turns its attention toward the super lightweight division. While the winter fight takes its course, it remains unclear if ‘The Dream’ will ever give Shakur Stevenson the fight that he’s been asking for, oh so vehemently.
