UK Prime Minister’s $15 Billion Gesture Towards Ukraine Draws Scathing Reactions From Former World Champion Amir Khan

As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues. Amir Khan, the fame of British boxing has come out against the latest support that the UK has lent to Ukraine. In a social media commentary, the boxer gave a reality check to Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak about how bad the situation was back home.

On 24th February 2022, Russian troops barged into Ukraine in an invasion that marked the biggest escalation since 2014 between the conflicting countries. Since then, multiple allies of Ukraine, like the USA and the UK, lent immense monetary and weaponry support to the country. Now, when the war inches toward its 2nd anniversary, the UK has lent additional monetary support to war struck Ukraine. In criticism of the government’s decision, Amir Khan reminded the PM of his priorities.

Amir Khan Speaks on UK’s Assistance to Ukraine

On his Instagram stories, the 37-year-old, inactive superlight roped in a reel by Sky News. In it, the news organization gave the nuances of the additional monetary support Sunak’s government has decided to provide Ukraine. Sunak announced that the UK was providing Ukraine with £ 2.5 billion ($3 billion) to support the country in defending itself as the Russian invasion continues. Khan did the math here. He noted that with this extra monetary support, the total sum that the British government has provided Ukraine becomes £15 billion ($19 billion). While he did not particularly object to the assistance his country provided to Ukraine, he did point out that the spending comes at a time when the UK’s economy continues to suffer.

In his story, ‘King Khan’ wrote, “When England is literally on its a**,  pple crying poverty and living costs are too high [clap emoji].” His criticism comes in the light of the British PM, Sunak inking a fresh security agreement with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine. It outlines that if Ukraine is ever attacked by Russia again, the UK would provide “swift and sustained” assistance to the war-torn ally.

In recent days, the British government has come under fire by its people for spending massive amounts of funds on the Russia-Ukraine war, while their home country continues to struggle with rising housing rates, surging inflation, and the crisis-hit healthcare system. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the country has had a rough patch to deal with, and it continues to do so. Amidst these mounting issues, Amir Khan hints a necessary areas that the government needs to look at rather than spending billions of pounds on the Russia-Ukraine war.
