Dmitry Bivol will enter the ring against Lyndon Arthur on December 23 at the Kingdom Arena, Saudi Arabia. Confident about his win, the Russian boxer is looking beyond ‘The Day of Reckoning.’ His choice of opponent, Artur Beterbiev, Callum Smith, or whoever wins in their fight on January 13 next year. It’s worth mentioning that Bivol hasn’t entered the ring for a year at this point. So, can he really wiz past Lyndon?
It’s true that Bivol defeated the formidable Canelo Álvarez back in 2022, but the WBA light heavyweight champion hasn’t scored a knockout since Sullivan Barrera in 2018. Not to mention, he has just fought twice in the last two years. Despite that, Bivol is confident about securing an undisputed fight with the winner of Smith vs. Beterbiev.

During an interview with Boxing News Plus, the St. Petersburg native revealed that he is focused on Lyndon Arthur as of now. However, a fight with the winner of the clash between Smith and Beterbiev is very much a possibility because both parties have shown interest. He went on to suggest that he and his team were thinking about Beterbiev as the next opponent for the undisputed title. But Bivol acknowledged the fight might not play out that way.
“To be honest, I am focused now on Lyndon Arthur, and then, I think, Yeah, they’re interested, of course, to make the fight happen, the undisputed fight, we talk about Beterbiev – things could be changed. It could be Smith but…Yeah, I think they will be interested, too,” said Bivol. Moreover, when probed about his prediction about the Smith vs. Beterbiev fight, Bivol claimed he was leaning towards Beterbiev. Regardless of who wins, Bivol might just get a shot at the undisputed status.
Undisputed clash is not a dream anymore for Bivol
The Russian has been the WBA light heavyweight champion since 2017 after he defeated Trent Broadhurst. By fighting and possibly defeating the winner of Smith vs. Beterbiev, Bivol can achieve undisputed status, something that wasn’t possible for Bivol before because Mauricio Sulaiman had deemed him ineligible, highlighting restrictions on Russian and Belarusian fighters as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.

But that has changed as Bivol revealed an important update from the WBC president. “We saw Mauricio Sulaiman and were talking with him, and we see the way to make it happen. Mauricio told us how to make it happen. And now I don’t see it’s a big problem to make this fight,” Bivol told Boxing Social. However, before all that can happen, the undefeated boxer has to conquer Lyndon Arthur this weekend.
