Shakur Stevenson last fought in April against Shuichiro Yoshino. It was Stevenson’s lightweight debut, and he dominated. He won by a sixth-round knockout, getting closer to a fight with Devin Haney. Haney recently won a controversial victory against Vasily Lomachenko. After the win, he and Stevenson faced off in the ring. A future clash between the two rising stars became apparent.

Unfortunately, the fight failed to materialize. The reason for the failed negotiations wasn’t fear or injury, but money. Soon after, Frank Martin was named as Stevenson’s potential adversary. Martin agreed to the fight but later backed out. According to rumours, he wanted to keep his undefeated record. However, recently, ‘Sugar’ revealed that he wanted a 50/50 split of the purse. So, now Shakur’s contender instead will be Edwin De Los Santos, a less renowned boxer with a 16-1 record. Now, months after the fight debacle with Haney, Stevenson spilt the beans about the actual reason for the match’s cancellation.

Shakur Stevenson reveals the untold truth about the Haney fight

In a recent episode of the podcast, ‘MILLION DOLLAZ WORTH OF GAME,’ Stevenson remained brutally honest about what actually happened. When the interviewer asked him about the cancellation of the Haney fight he said, “Devin and them had a little situation that they tried to throw out there as some chump change.” He explained how Haney tried to give him an unjust purse split, despite his achievements. He said, “I’ll tell you exactly what it is. They offered me less than I made in my last three fights for supposedly the biggest fight in my career. I fought Yoshino, I fought Oscar Valdez, I fought Robinson, and I made more in those fights than what I was offered to fight him.”

King Gillie, a famous rapper, was also present in the podcast. He had been actively following the news around their fight. He alluded that according to the news in the media circles, Stevenson was offered a 25% split of the purse. ‘Sugar’ consented by saying they put a specific number out there too, “like eight million exactly.”

Shakur expressed utter disappointment in the way things were handled from Haney’s end. He said, “So if it was 8 million, right, how much would he have made?” Stevenson added, “But look, you think he was making 24 million versus me? Top Rank is doing the fight.”

He said that there were lies being peddled in the media. Stevenson believes that Haney would have made much more money from the fight that was revealed saying, “How in the world would I be offered eight million? I’m jumping quick, come on, eight million, let’s do it, set it up. So many lies, no doubt in your mind.”

Shakur explained that he didn’t back out of the Haney fight over fear or lack of skill. It was about unfair pay. The offer didn’t match the fight’s hype. He called out Haney’s team for misleading the public with inflated numbers. However, Stevenson is now focused on his next opponent, Edwin De Los Santos.
