Terence Crawford Opens Up About the Possibility of Fighting the Winner of Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo

Canelo Alvarez is all set to square off against Jermell Charlo to defend his Super Middleweight title on September 30 in Las Vegas. Alvarez, at first, was rumored to go against the other twin brother, Jermall Charlo, but he wasn’t available because of some unforeseen circumstances. This will be the first time Jermell Charlo is going to move up in weight classes, as he’s never fought above 154 before this. Although, in the past, he has clearly mentioned how he never wanted to move up in weight class. While Alvarez won a title fight at 175, Charlo was once in second position right after Gennady Golovkin but later got removed from the rankings as he became inactive.

But before this bout, another fight has everyone’s eyes glued to the sport. Errol Spence Jr vs. Terence Crawford on July 29th is one of the most anticipated bouts in boxing history. The winner of this fight will decide who’s the new Undisputed Welterweight champion. And Spence has already expressed his will about moving up in weight classes after he’s done with Crawford. On the other hand, Crawford was asked about the idea of moving up at 168. Let’s see what he had to say.

Terence Crawford on moving up in weight classes further

Terence Crawford has already conquered 135 and 140. He is currently on his way to carving his name at the pinnacle of Welterweight as well. In his recent interview with FightHype, he was asked if he’d be fine to take on the winner of Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo.

This question was posed because his rival, Errol Spence Jr, has shown interest in taking on the winner of that fight. So, was Crawford planning to do the same? Well, when Crawford was asked if he could move up to 168 ever, he said, “What 168? I ain’t going up there.” Then the reporter asked him about his prediction for Alvarez vs. Charlo. He stated that he’s “definitely” on Canelo’s side. Later, he was asked about his limit in moving up in divisions and whether it’s 154. Crawford just said, “No.”

Unlike Crawford, Spence has only been fighting at 147, since the beginning of his professional career. He’s currently the Unified Welterweight champion, and after becoming the Undisputed champ, he’s open to explore new opportunities. And for that reason, he wants to change weight class and face a bigger challenge.

Errol Spence Jr is interested in the Canelo Alvarez fight

Currently, Errol Spence Jr’s entire focus is on Crawford. He could also tread in Jermell Charlo’s footsteps and move up in multiple weight classes to get a shot against Canelo Alvarez. He told FightHype, “[A fight against Alvarez] sounds good, but I mean, [Alvarez has] a three-fight deal. So, I don’t know who it could be in that deal.”

So, he doesn’t see it happening anytime sooner. But at the same time, he stated that he was willing to take the title at 154 after establishing his reign at 147. He said, “Yeah, I might [jump up the weight classes]. It’s something that I would definitely think about, but I’m focused on the task at hand [against Crawford], and I want to get a belt at 154 pounds, too. It could happen; I don’t see why not.”
