It’s been eight years since Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao entered the ring against each other in an event aptly named ‘The Fight of the Century.’ It went on to become one of the richest fights in boxing history, generating over $400 million through PPV alone. However, fans were left unsatisfied as Mayweather danced around the ring while Pacquiao, suffering from a rotator cuff injury, failed to catch the undefeated boxer.
Despite that, during the RIZIN 45 MMA event held at Saitama Super Arena, Japan, the Philippines superstar took center stage to announce a rematch with former rival ‘Money’ Mayweather. “I hope to see you in Japan in a big fight against… Floyd Mayweather,” said ‘Pac Man.’ The same was confirmed by Nobuyuki Sakakibara, RIZIN president, claiming the talks are ongoing. To understand how much the potential fight can make today, here’s how much they made back in 2015.

After years of negotiations, the two boxers settled on fighting each other on 2 May 2005. When it finally happened in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, in front of thousands in the audience, the fight generated over $600 million in revenue. It included every stream of income – tickets, PPV, sponsorships, merchandise, closed-circuit and international rights.
However, the biggest contributor to the fight’s revenue was the pay-per-view sales, collecting 4.4 million buys in America and 700K in the UK. The price for PPV was $100 a piece, so the total from PPV revenue stands somewhere around a whopping $430 million. These numbers towered over Mayweather’s prior record with Oscar De La Hoya, where they collected 2.48 million PPV buys. However, it begs the question – how much did the fighters pocket?

The legendary fighters decided to split the purse 60/40 in Mayweather’s favor. Both fighters were happy with their new and improved bank balance when the fight concluded. Floyd Mayweather went home with the bigger piece of the cake – $240 million. On the other hand, Pacquiao’s piece was smaller but substantial. He walked away with $125 million for the fight.
Given such numbers from eight years ago, if the fight were to happen today, it would definitely break their previous records. Both fighters have indulged themselves in post-retirement exhibition bouts, raking in millions. So, if those events are any evidence, a rematch between Floyd and Pacquiao will potentially attract each and every eye in the boxing world.
