It’s been nearly sixteen months since the world last heard of Gennady Golovkin. Occasional updates about him surface sporadically on various social media platforms. Nevertheless, many have started speculating whether ‘Triple G’ has ultimately bid farewell to the world of boxing. The Kazakh boxer, a former unified middleweight champion, last fought Canelo Alvarez for his super middleweight title.

It was their trilogy bout. Their first bout in 2017 ended in a questionable draw. Many believed Golovkin had done enough to be declared the winner. A year later, they met for a rematch. Though Alvarez won via majority decision, this time too, the scorecards weren’t above suspicion. It led to calls for a third match, though it came four years later. Early this year, ‘Triple G’ relinquished the IBF and WBA belts he held in the middleweight division subsequent to receiving the marching order to face the mandatory challengers.

Though he showed glimpses of his brilliance, at age 41, it appeared that Gennady Golovkin was past his prime. The fight for Canelo Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight title ended in a unanimous loss for the 2004 Athens Olympic silver medalist.

According to a March piece on the World Boxing News, legend Erik Morales, who trains former light middleweight champion Jaime Munguia, mentioned that Gennady Golovkin might be considering retiring from boxing. The update emerged when talks of a fight between his charge and the Kazakh boxer came over.

He told Mexico City-based boxing news portal Izquierdazo, “I don’t think [we are looking for that fight with Gennady Golovkin anymore]. What I understand, what I was told by the [promotional] company [GGG Boxing], is that Golovkin said to them that he is leaving boxing for an indefinite period. And if he decides to return, he will let everybody know. So, we can’t think of Golovkin right now [for Munguia].

A few months ago, a new update on Gennady Golovkin emerged. He was standing in front of a beverage refrigerator that held only one product of his energy drink, ‘Triple GGG.’ But what intrigued most of the fans was the appearance of the former champion. He appeared overweight and portly.

But given how some of the most lucrative deals turn out, fans shouldn’t rule out Golovkin’s return to the ring completely either. Additionally, for a boxer who began his professional journey nearly two decades ago, Gennady Golovkin had done fairly well for himself. According to ‘celebrity net worth,’ ‘Triple G’s net worth for the year 2023 stands at around $30 million. So in essence, unlike many others, he has the means to thrive even during an extended absence from the boxing ring.
