“Running With People You Shouldn’t Be Running With”: Bill Haney Lashes Out at Ryan Garcia for Getting Influenced by Floyd Mayweather

Only if the fans and followers were aware. After December 2, it appeared that things were finally settling down for Ryan Garcia. Instead, he flagged off a long, drawn-out merry-go-round of names for the much-vaunted year-opener. Now, as the first month comes to an end, once again they find Garcia, flagging down. Perhaps he decided the narrative needed his version too. So in a tell-all, he explained in detail what all happened. It would be naive to think that the conversation would go unanswered.

Much of the script dwelled on how the Devin Haney fight, seemingly well within closure, slipped out. It appeared right in the crosshairs. But in came the revelation that instead of Haney, Rolando Romero, a long-time charge of Mayweather Promotions, would enter the opposite corner. More so, clips of ‘TBE’ and ‘KingRy’ started making the rounds by that time. Joining the dots, many wondered whether Mayweather Jr. had any hand in Garcia’s switch. In the FightHype conversation, Ryan Garcia shared what happened in the background. However, Devin Haney’s father believes there’s a lot more he needs to learn and work on.

Bill Haney dissected Garcia’s claims. His response begins with the now famous short clip of ‘KingRy’ and Mayweather Jr. jogging during the wee hours of the day. The caption read,’ Floyd Mayweather doesn’t want Haney vs. Garcia?’

“Think if you go out on a jog, you’re gonna get faster,” said Bill Haney. Then Ryan Garcia’s FightHype video barges in, where he is talking about the trip to Las Vegas and the time spent going around with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Next, clips show Mayweather Jr.’s famous quote on the three boxers who matter the most in current boxing. He listed out Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia, and Gervonta Davis. Then it was back to the Garcia interview. He explains how the switch over from Haney to Romero happened, purportedly post-conversation with Mayweather Jr. He said, “…he’s like, why would he do that? Why don’t you fight Rollie for the belt and then fight Devin Haney? Gave me advice I said that makes pretty much sense.”

So Bill Haney quipped. Under Mayweather Jr.’s influence, Ryan Garcia agreed upon something that may not have been the best choice to become ‘The Best Ever’. He said, “You being influenced by ‘The Best Ever’ and you agreed that might be not the decision that you needed to do to be ‘The Best Ever’.”

He continued that if that were the case, then ‘KingRy’ should avoid taking that direction and getting along with such a crowd. Hence, it would do him much greater benefit if he went back to the people who took him to the place where he stands today.

“Then stay off that track, running with the people that you shouldn’t be running with, and get back to running with the people that got you to where you are, and let’s see if you can beat the big superstar that everybody thinks that you are, and let’s see if Ryan’s stand on business or is he gonna go for a jog somewhere,” said Bill Haney.

On his Instagram handle, the celebrated boxing dad had written, “@floydmayweather They running out of excuses. I’m looking forward to that one day @realdevinhaney can beat @kingryan face-up. #TeamHaney.”

Now, sure, how the Team Haney’s response register with Team Garcia? Whether it’s only the beginning of another back-and-forth? Time alone will tell. In the FightHype interview, Garcia shared the resumption of conversation for the Haney fight. Perhaps that’s what matters most to fans and followers. They would be hoping with crossed fingers—they should be second-time lucky.
