In a saddening incident that happened over the Thanksgiving weekend, the boxing world mourned the loss of Samuel ‘Tsunami’ Teah, who fell victim to gun violence in Philadelphia. The details surrounding the incident still remain unclear, but it appears Teah found himself in the midst of a tragic domestic dispute. Teah, a 36-year-old junior welterweight, had carved a niche in the boxing world.
Rashiem Jefferson, Teah’s head trainer, broke the news on social media, stating, “Sad news today, I lost a brother, a fighter, a friend, a whatever you could think of. This was a huge hurt piece. God’s time is the best timing. I don’t know why or where but I know God had another place for you and that’s the only thing that ease the pain.” The passing of the boxer has left the boxing world in shock and at a sense of loss.

Teah’s life journey was marked by resilience. Born in Liberia, he moved to Ghana to escape the civil unrest before settling in the United States. A personal tragedy struck at 21. He lost his mother, sisters, older brother, nephew, and two nieces as well as a family friend in a devastating fire in December 2008. Teah, wearing “12-26-08” on his trunks, carried the weight of this grave loss throughout his career.
Despite televised setbacks against Montana Love and Brandun Lee, Teah rebounded, securing notable wins and displaying unwavering determination. His last victory, a triumph over Enriko Gogobinka, set the stage for a potential comeback in 2024. Unfortunately, a senseless act of violence abruptly ended those aspirations. Teah’s manager, Sarah Fina, shared the pain of losing a cherished friend, saying, “Say it ain’t so… my family, my friend. Sam say it ain’t so.” Even the two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford wrote a heartfelt message. He shared a picture of them posing together and wrote, “Rest in peace my boy! You was a great person.”
