Thirty years ago, on this very day, with the WBC Welterweight title on the line, Pernell Whitaker stepped inside the ring with Julio Cesar Chavez. Maintaining a southpaw stance, with his left hand answering the phone, Whitaker skated around Chavez from the very beginning. He held his ground, came right back, and flicked that jab again and again. Ahead of the fight, Evander Holyfield‘s trainer Emmanuel Steward felt if Whitaker could throw short and quick punches and “then get out,” he would have “a chance” against Chavez.

While in Steward’s opinion, Pernell could not afford a “mistake,” Cristobal Rosas, the official trainer of Chavez declared, “After the fourth or fifth round, the fight will be under Julio’s control“. Contrary to Rosas’ expectations and in agreement with Steward’s instructions, Pernell moved impressively well and remained effective throughout the fight with his quick jabs.
