Regis Prograis Breaks a Record He Won’t Be Proud Of; It Involves Shakur Stevenson

Boxers typically take pride in breaking records in the sport. Unfortunately for Regis Prograis, this ain’t one of those situations. The New Orleans native faced the biggest challenge of his career thus far by going up against Devin Haney. While ‘Rougarou’ could not manage to pull off an upset, he did break a record that will haunt him for the rest of his career. Hint – Shakur Stevenson knows about it quite well!

Fighting in his hometown, Devin Haney put on a show of a lifetime, clearing any doubts about his skills and power. However, Prograis became the unwitting victim of the onslaught. Haney systematically dismantled Prograis, showcasing his boxing prowess that convinced Regis to accept Haney’s power during the post-fight interview. Nevertheless, it begs the question – what record did ‘Rougarou’ break?

Regis Prograis beats Edwin De Los Santos

After the fight concluded with Haney reigning supreme as the new WBC Super welterweight and two-division champion, Regis’ problems began. Soon, Michale Benson took X (formerly Twitter), revealing the stats from the fight. “Regis Prograis only landed 36 punches on Devin Haney according to the punch stats,” wrote Benson. He went on to reveal that the number of punches landed was lower than what Edwin De Los Santos landed on Shakur Stevenson during their recent clash. 

“He has broken Edwin De Los Santos’ record (40 vs. Shakur Stevenson) for the lowest number of punches landed in a 12-round fight ever recorded by CompuBox,” Benson wrote. To add insult to injury, in Shakur’s fight, Shakur was blamed for running away. But in this case, Regis’ inability to catch the agile Haney is being painted as the reason. On the other hand, Haney is being showered with praise from every direction. 

Former pro/boxing promoter praises Haney’s understanding of distance

When Haney dropped Regis in the third round, it was clear he was going to win hearts through the fight. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Dmitriy Salita turned to X, praising ‘The Dream’ Haney. Responding to a tweet from Ariel Halwani (also praising Haney for the performance), Salita highlighted Haney’s discipline, technique, and everything else. 

“Disciplined boxing, great technique, beautiful combination of using defense and offense in a high level fight. Haney’s understanding of distance is absolutely elite,” wrote Salita. What’s more, Salita even suggested that Haney is constantly improving after each fight. “He keeps getting better,” wrote the former boxer. Given Haney’s last performance against Vasyl Lomachenko, Salita’s claim isn’t far from the truth.

He might not have intended to, but Regis has to live with the fact that he landed the least amount of punches in a 12-round boxing match ever.
