It takes months, if not years, of hard work for a boxer to even get a title shot in a sport as competitive as boxing. So, they do everything in their power to keep those titles once they get them. However, that might not be the case for David Benavidez. In fact, ‘The Mexican Monster’ has managed to lose his WBC Super Middleweight title not once but two different times.
The WBC Interim World Super Middleweight champion is about to go toe to toe with Demetrius Andrade on 25 November. The fight will unfold in the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, with thousands in the audience. However, before the Saturday night fight kicks off, fans have been wondering why he was stripped of his title in the first place. More importantly, was the decision related to drug-related issues?

In 2020, ‘The Mexican Monster’ was about to face Roamer Alexis Angulo with his WBC Super Middleweight title on the line. However, tragedy struck during the weigh-in for the fight. Benavidez weighed in over the weight limit, 2.8 pounds over the stipulated 168 pounds, to be exact. So, the WBC stripped Benavidez of his title.
What’s more, Benavidez was not allowed to retain his title even if he won that fight. So, the fight proceeded with just Angulo eligible to win the title. However, luckily for Benavidez, he won the fight via technical knockout. Talking about losing his title, Benavidez expressed his disappointment while blaming himself for the consequences. “I’m very disappointed losing the title on the scale…I put the blame on myself, the last three pounds wouldn’t come off,” Benavidez said during the Showtime weigh-in stream.
Has David Benavidez lost the title outside the ring earlier, too? Did WBC strip him for failing a doping test?
Surprisingly, the 2020 fight against Roamer Alexis Angulo wasn’t the first time Benavidez lost his title. Back in September 2018, the Las Vegas resident was involved in a similar controversy that landed him a four-month suspension. It was in addition to being stripped of his super middleweight title by the World Boxing Association.
David Benavidez now has been stripped of the WBC super middleweight title twice, once for a positive coke test and once for missing weight by like 3 pounds. SMH.

His suspension came as a result of testing positive for cocaine from a urine test. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) collected urine samples on 27 August 2018, resulting in his suspension and stripped title. So, Benavidez later appeared in the ring in March 2019. However, the undefeated boxer has cleared the weigh-in for his upcoming fight on 25 November this year.
