Defeat can be a hard pill to swallow! Especially after months of training and countless hours spent in the gym. In a similar instance, Daniel Dubois lost his shot at claiming the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring Heavyweight titles against Oleksandr Usyk on 26 August. ‘The Cat’ made Dubois taste the canvas twice during the bout, with the stoppage coming in after the second one. But the twist in the story is that ‘Dynamite’ took Usyk down in the fifth round, which the referee declared a low blow. Unsurprisingly, Frank Warren had strong feelings about the decision!
Following the incident during the bout, the referee gave Usyk around four minutes to recover from the alleged low blow. However, the story did not end there. Dubois’ promoter claimed it was not a low blow and would appeal the decision. While Frank Warren may feel confident about his low-blow appeal, boxing fans don’t seem to share his belief. After the tweet went live on X, fans took to X (formerly Twitter), expressing their disagreement.

Fans show discontent over the appeal from Frank Warren
Everybody loves an underdog! But in this case, the major underdog, Dubois, could not steer fans’ favor on his side. In fact, the exact opposite happened, with fans clamoring behind Usyk. What’s more, despite Frank Warren’s strong belief in the situation, fans began speculating about his intentions behind the appeal.
For instance, a user said, “Warren is just upset that his ONLY chance of unifying the division was Dubois winning. If Dubois won, you’d have had a contract signed to fight Fury next day. Fury don’t want Usyk, he’d fight Dubois. Now it means that Fury will get stripped in Feb. And Warren has no belts.” The user is quite on point, speculating about the entire situation. If Dubois had won the fight, he would have gotten a direct shot at Tyson Fury’s WBC title. Not to mention, Warren would have benefited as a promoter from that outcome.

Another user hysterically commented, “And they have officially laughed and then put it in the bin.” The user insinuated how naïve the decision to appeal the fight is. From this user’s point of view, there is no question about the punch being a low blow.

Similarly, another user stated, “This is just embarrassing. Not only was it clearly a low blow, the rule is clear that anything on or under waistband is low and it was clear as day, he was then comprehensively outclassed and stopped. It wasn’t close so no need to appeal #Boxing.” This user did not just disagree with Warren’s claims – the user also pointed out Usyk’s outdistancing performance over Dubois. The user also pointed toward the rules, and the interesting fact is that Usyk wears the belt lower than most boxers.

Even Dan Rafael, a sports writer, chimed in with an image of the official appeal document. He stated, “The Warren bullsh*t begins in paragraph 2 of the appeal where the nonsensical assumption is made that Usyk would not have risen had the ref ruled it a legal body shot from Dubois (which it wasn’t).” The shot clearly seems to have hurt Usyk, but claiming he wouldn’t have gotten up is a little farfetched. Moreover, other users replied to Rafael’s tweet. The reply read, “Surely that’s not the actual appeal.” Also, one of the few supporters of Warren’s claim commented on Rafael’s tweet. He said, “Seems fine to me hopefully we win the appeal DDD robbed of his world titles.”

Meanwhile, another supporter for Warren also commented, “How it is nonsensical….usyk was folded like a deckchair still after 3 min. He couldn’t stand after 10 seconds not a chance.” The user claims Usyk did not recover, even after three minutes from the shot.

Deciding whether it was a low blow or not is now up to the board. However, the consensus from the fans is that it was not. Only time will tell if the authorities share the same opinion. What’s your take on the low-blow situation? Besides that one shot, who do you think dominated the match?
