It appears that Deontay Wilder too has picked an opponent for himself before his fight against Anthony Joshua this December in Saudi Arabia. This news came out right after the talks of Anthony Joshua’s bout against Dillian Whyte once again revived. It all started when Whyte seemed frustrated as he appeared as a guest on talkSPORT. He accused Matchroom of using his name as a scapegoat with no intention of actually making the fight.

Furthermore, Eddie Hearn replied to the accusations by sending the same contract as earlier. He revealed that Whyte had rejected the £8m payday saying ‘Absolutely not, this is unacceptably low’. This caused them to shift their focus towards another opponent. However, Hearn revealed that Whyte has agreed this time. He even contacted Whyte and asked for confirmation, and Whyte replied positively. Hearn appeared to be optimistic as he claimed, “They’ll have a contract today. We need to move at pace but if they’re serious that fight can 100 percent happen.” Moreover, Wilder surprisingly appears to have found the next opponent for himself as well.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ hasn’t stepped in the ring ever since his dominating victory against ‘The Nordic Nightmare’ Robert Helenius. After 2 repeated losses against ‘The Gypsy King’ Wilder finally managed to get some respire. He broke the two-fight losing street as he knocked out the Swedish boxer in just the first round of the match-up. Wilder has now challenged ‘The Destroyer’ Andy Ruiz to be his next opponent. Moreover, he will have another chance to get back at Fury as WBC has ordered the fight between him and Andy Ruiz Jr. to determine the next mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury.

Recently, Malik Scott who is Wilder’s trainer, uploaded a video on Instagram. In the video, Scott was wearing a T-Shirt with “TIMES UP!!!” written on it. Meanwhile, Wilder was pointing towards the quote written at the top. The caption revealed that they have already sent the official offer to Ruiz Jr. He wrote, “TIMES UP: We doing our part and we sent you a helluva offer. Ah Andy Ruiz The ball is in your court now, let’s get it signed and sealed. #signthef***ingcontract #Timesup”. It remains to be seen how Ruiz Jr. reacts to the challenge. Earlier, Ruiz Jr. was briefly in talks with a bout against Tyson Fury. However, the negotiations fell off and Fury even blasted Ruiz for pricing himself out with a whopping amount of $20 million.

Wilder vs. Ruiz – The battle for a shot at Fury’s crown

The World Boxing Council (WBC) is yet to determine a new mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury, who currently holds the heavyweight championship title. Fury’s latest fight in December ended with a decisive win over Derek Chisora in London. However, he has not competed this year and has not finalized an opponent or a specific date for a 2023 fight. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman mentioned that potential matchups with Usyk, Joshua, and Ruiz did not materialize. Fury aims to participate in the best fight possible.

Fury’s highly anticipated undisputed title fight against Oleksandr Usyk is uncertain, according to promoter Bob Arum. The heavyweight division experienced inactivity in 2023. Negotiations for the bout between Usyk and Fury fell apart, and Usyk is scheduled to defend his titles against Daniel Dubois in August.

The WBC may need to reassess its decision on a mandatory challenger for Fury. However, the organization plans to maintain its policy: Deontay Wilder can participate in a final eliminator against Andy Ruiz for a chance to face Fury and compete for the WBC championship. Mauricio Sulaiman acknowledged the unfortunate situation of Fury not having the desired fights and discussed it with Frank Warren. The Wilder vs. Ruiz final elimination is still in progress. Currently, the WBC is not considering alternative options.
