Jermell Charlo‘s world came crashing down this Saturday when he stood across Canelo Alvarez in the squared circle. His fighting self never showed up to the fight and left the arena comprehensively beaten, both psychologically and physically. The American boxer now has more pressing questions. Should he try to redeem his honor and WBO title against Tim Tszyu? Or should he continue chasing another super fight against Terence Crawford?
When Charlo picked up the mic after his crushing loss, he tried to salvage the night by calling out ‘Bud’ and setting up the next fight. “Hey, I want to fight Terence Crawford. I can fight Terence Crawford in my weight division. He can fight Errol Spence or whatever he got going on. Get that out of the way. I’m waiting, ” Charlo announced. But does the proposed fight have enough appeal for the fans, or is it just a disaster in the making?

Terence Crawford vs. Jermell Charlo: Why this potential showdown is a recipe for disaster?
Firstly, all the buzz surrounding Crawford vs. Charlo has fizzled out as Charlo’s stocks have plummeted. It was not the loss that caused the slide, but the manner in which the ‘Iron Man’ dropped the fight. As pointed out by Tszyu to Fox Sports, “[Jermell] Charlo just went in there to survive. He never made it competitive… He never pushed it, never put the press up, just moved around backwards.”

If the 33-year-old had put on a competitive exhibit, he wouldn’t have attracted flak from the boxing community. Even Crawford was quick to dismiss him as a future competitor and bashed him for a lack of aggressive spirit. In a series of posts, Crawford slammed Charlo and specified that Charlo was no longer on his hit list.
“Ok y’all I’m over @TwinCharlo he’s no longer on my hit list. He went out there and laid down and let Canelo spank him like he was his daddy with no type of resistance,” Crawford wrote on his X-handle. Likewise, in another post, Crawford declared, “Didn’t even try to win, all you did was try to survive. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
Therefore, the writing is on the wall for Charlo. Crawford has moved on, and he is slowly drifting towards Alvarez. The 36-year-old is chasing greatness to close his career, and Alvarez fits the bill, not Charlo. Maybe now it’s his time to move up and show Charlo how to do it.
Meanwhile, Charlo should have another priority in mind, clinching back his undisputed title. Without it, a bout with Charlo holds no allure for Crawford. If the stars were to align and Charlo ended up fighting Crawford next, only chaos would ensue. Where does it leave Tszyu and Errol Spence Jr. and especially the 154-lb division? After all, chaos is not the ideal ingredient to make a mouthwatering dish.
Terence Crawford and Jermell Charlo: Beef in brief
Once close but now enemies, the tale of their beef is amusing. Charlo has labeled Crawford a clout chaser on multiple occasions, and he once again reiterated his stance when he answered the media after his loss. He said, “Yeah, you know, Terence Crawford could be on radar. I think he already been on Twitter and like, lip-wrestling with the internet just to get some clout and some fans in the sky, you know.”

Crawford recently revealed what sparked a heated rivalry between the two when he appeared on The Porter Way Podcast. The Omaha native had cordial relations with the Charlo twins, however, they soon turned sour when he decided to move up divisions. The genesis of their tussle lay in Charlo and Errol Spence Jr. being stablemates. In addition, Charlo trains with Spence Jr.’s coach, and they go back a long time.

Hence, when Charlo talked down to Crawford, it opened the first chapter of their animosity. “For him to start bashing me and talking bad about me and saying I’m gonna get knocked out. Just going out his way to say little slick s**t about me. I was just like, ‘Man, that’s some h*e s**t'”, he disclosed.

The flames of their strife even burned hot during the Crawford-Spence fight when the visuals of them exchanging words went viral. The two never came close to penning down a deal. Despite this, if you throw their hypothetical matches with Tszyu and Spence Jr. and pray for favorable results, it might produce a bout the fans are craving. However, right now, a fight between them doesn’t make sense.
