Which is the hottest potential fight in boxing right now? Without a shred of doubt, it has to be the Gervonta Davis vs. Devin Haney fight! Their ongoing feud on social media further stokes the anticipation among fans. However, after Haney’s move up to 140 pounds, a fight between the two seems bleaker and bleaker. Despite that, there’s one thing that may make the fight real.

Of course, it’s money. Given the fact that just the potential of such a clash can fill the community with chatter, imagine what an actual announcement of the fight could do! Not to forget, Davis’ last fight against Ryan Garcia broke numerous records in terms of numbers. It generated $22.8 million from the gate alone, not to mention the 1.2 million PPV sales. So, it’s safe to say that a fight between Haney and Davis, which is much bigger, would surpass that easily. However, there is one tiny little detail that both fighters need to consider to keep the inevitable clash fair.

It’s all about the weight

It’s imperative that both sides meticulously orchestrate the spectacle to unfold in the precise weight division that would be fair on both sides. The Baltimore native is currently ruling over the lightweight division. Meanwhile, ‘The Dream’ Haney just made his way up to super lightweight, defeating Regis Prograis and becoming a two-division champion. However, after the fight, in the post-fight press conference, he revealed he is considering moving to welterweight to compete. It makes things even more complicated! For the fight to happen, Davis should not be forced to go up to welterweight. At the same time, Haney can not be forced to go back down to 135 pounds to face Gervonta Davis.

So, it begs the question – which weight division would be the sweet spot for both without tipping the scale in either’s favor? The simple answer is – 140 pounds! What’s more, the southpaw isn’t a stranger to the weight class. Davis fought Mario Barrios at 140 lbs, winning the contest via eleventh-round stoppage. Even Haney made the same point during the October 24 interview with Ariel Halwani. “It would have to happen at 140. He’s fought at 140. He beat Mario Barrios at 140. I’m at 140 now. It would make the most sense for it to be at 140,” said Haney. However, just having the fight at 140 isn’t enough!

Devin Haney has to wait

It’s not enough to have the fight at 140 pounds! Even though ‘Tank’ once visited the 140 division, he would need some time and tune-up fights to properly settle down in the division. Plus, given the fact that Davis hasn’t been in the ring since April this year, he would need some practice. A fight against Teofimo Lopez, Josh Taylor, or even Subriel Matias would do great.

While there hasn’t been much chatter about a potential fight between Davis and Taylor, the same can not be said about the other two. Back in June this year, Matias stated on social media, “I would love to take your zero and add it to my knockout percentage.” Meanwhile, Lopez’s father, Teofimo Lopez Sr., told Boxing Scene in April this year, “I respect Tank. He has a powerful left hand. But he needs to go to the top dogs. We’re right there. We’re waiting for him.” So, it’s safe to say that there is no shortage of opponents for ‘Tank’ at 140lbs.

140 is the best bet for Gervonta Davis vs. Devin Haney

Once the undefeated ‘Tank’ has settled in the division and gotten used to the extra weight – the fight would be good to go! It would ensure both fighters are at their peak condition! Davis wouldn’t get exhausted due to bulking up excessively. Meanwhile, Haney would not have to lose so much weight that he would be left drained during the fight. Having the fight at 140 lbs is optimal for both fighters, ensuring they are at their peak while providing fans with an electrifying night.

Because the fight promises to break Davis’ prior record and potentially rake in more money, the fight between Haney and Davis isn’t that farfetched. If and when the fight happens, strategically choosing the weight division should be their main priority. However, that’s my perspective – do you think the weight class matters for their potential clash? If not 140, what weight division do you think would be optimal for the fight?
