And the list of Ryan Garcia suitors keeps growing. His hunt for an opponent seems unending, as he fails to zero in on one. The American could have his pick among the champions, Devin Haney and Rolando Romero. Failed negotiations, a few conversations with Floyd Mayweather, and a rift with Oscar De La Hoya stranded him with no candidate in sight. Enter the wild card, Adrien Broner.

‘KingRy’ has scanned multiple options, and Adrien Broner is the latest name thrown in the mix. Amid the thick veil of uncertainty, trainer Kevin Cunningham has pitched in the idea of the “universally recognized” Broner facing Garcia. While he is trying to sell the bout as an “event,” there are some lingering questions.

Ryan Garcia, 25, has the potential to become the next face of boxing. Therefore, to achieve his quest, he wants to stack up his resume and add more fights under his belt. Then the California native can climb up to the champion’s throne. But Broner doesn’t fit the bill.

While it might not be a big deal if Garcia ends up fighting Broner, the fight doesn’t hold any allure for the fans. Broner, at 35-4-1, is a mere shadow of his former self. Despite his past illustrious resume and belts in four different categories, he might not be the ideal fighter that will move the needle.

Broner held a reputation almost a decade ago as one of the best in the world. But that changed when he fought Manny Pacquiao in 2019, and since then, he has yet to put on a competitive performance. While the 34-year-old has bounced back with two wins, the prime version of Broner is long gone. While Garcia will gain experience by exchanging punches with Broner, putting an aged and faded Broner aside won’t help Garcia’s case.

Nothing to help ‘KingRy’ for his crown

Does defeating Broner bolster Garcia’s brand image and put him on better negotiation terms with the 140-pound champions? That’s highly unlikely. It is also doubtful whether Garcia, at 24-1, will be keen to pick a fight with him. Win or lose, the Broner fight holds no significance for the boxing community.

In addition, the fans will grow skeptical of Garcia’s eagerness to match with the best. The Broner fight is a bad optic for him and his millions of followers. Meanwhile, putting Broner on the negotiation table also spells doom for other capable fights.

Garcia is left with only one potential suitor, Isaac Cruz, as Devin Haney and ‘Rolly’ Romero left the negotiations with a bad taste in their mouths. The tussle over the PPV share drifted the parties apart. If a similar trend continues amid growing uncertainty, Garcia will soon run out of names and might end up fighting no one.

Ryan Garcia’s cherry-picking heading for an unfortunate end

After thrilling fans and super lightweight fighters for his next fight, Garcia has failed to keep up the hype. He kept adding names to his hit list and kept dropping those for no apparent reason. He dodged the Haney fight on Floyd Mayweather’s advice, as the fight would have failed to sell PPVs besides being a mismatch for him.

A similar tough opponent, Jose Ramirez, got shelved. Rolly Romero “priced himself out,” and the fans are now in the dark about Garcia’s next opponent. Garcia has no face or name to target now. With bigger fights sidelined, Garcia might have to fight either a former champion in his twilight years or a surging contender. Both scenarios will ruin his chances of becoming a champion. All Garcia needs to do is put his resume or fans as a priority instead of a paycheck.
