The luxury of plenty, but avoidance. That’s how you can sum up the current situation for Devin Haney. Since cruising past Regis Prograis and snatching the WBC title at 140 pounds, he is on a hunt for a suitable opponent. As the American continues his surge and keeps collecting gold straps, he is in flux over the future. He has a long list of potential suitors. But not every foe is keen to match up with him. So where does it leave the super lightweight champion?

After securing the undisputed crown at 135 pounds, ‘The Dream’ relinquished the crown and moved up. With just one fight under his belt in the new division, he is screening multiple opponents. Is he finally ready to quash his tussle with Gervonta Davis? Or does he need a money fight with Ryan Garcia? It seems Saudi Arabia and HE Turki Alalshikh hold the cards.

Gervonta Davis: Trash talk, friction, and a $20 million paycheck

‘Tank’ and Devin Haney go a long way back, and the Haneys are eager to stage the fight. The Haneys have even offered to shell out a $20 million check to Davis to make the fight possible. Despite the money on the offer, Davis has failed to come to terms with the idea of meeting Haney in the middle of the square circle.

The fans have been dreaming of a hard-hitting Davis pitted against a technically equipped Haney for years now. Moreover, the friction and trash-talking between the two never died off and still trickles out on social media. So what’s the holdup?

Both Davis, at 29-0, and Haney, at 31-0, have bludgeoned others after coming into the fight heavier than their opponents. Haney weighed over 160 pounds as he stepped in to take Prograis. Similarly, Davis dismantled Garcia in a catchweight fight. Therefore, the contractual stipulations might derail the fight.

But after altering the heavyweight division’s landscape, HE Turki Alalshikh has expressed his desire to make the fight possible. When Saudi Arabia comes calling, you bow down, fill your pockets, and step into the boxing ring. Realistically, this fight is still a couple of years removed from reality, and Haney might have to look at ‘KingRy’ from his division.

Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia: Fixing the PPV image

When Ryan Garcia began his journey as a super lightweight after KOing Oscar Duarte, he had the WBC champion on his mind. Then Garcia flirted with the idea of fighting Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Isaac Cruz. But it didn’t end well for the 25-year-old contender, as he was again left with no opponent in sight.

Eddie Hearn believes he could sandwich himself between Haney and Garcia and help with the negotiations. He wants a super fight for the April 20 DAZN card. With ‘Rolly’ Romero and ‘Pitbull’ Cruz already set for a match, Davis’ lack of interest in a rematch, and Teofimo Lopez‘s low regard for the boxer, Garcia has only one option left.

A fight with Garcia might be the best scenario for Haney, as he would be a clear favorite going into the fight. Garcia is still evolving himself as a boxer and still molding himself as a better boxer. In addition, the Garcia fight might rack up hefty PPV buys and clear Haney’s image as a non-PPV fighter. Haney reportedly only sold 50k PPVs against Prograis.

He is neither a boring fighter nor unpopular with the fans, as Prograis also had 2 million live viewers. It’s his boxing style and lack of trash-talking that hinder his popularity among non-purists. Otherwise, the San Francisco native has to put on a splendid performance against his mandatory challengers and bolster his negotiation power.

Besides his technical prowess, what exactly separates Devin Haney? It’s his willingness to build a legacy. He has already fought the likes of George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko. While he has fought close fights because of his defensive style and reliance on counter-punching and hiding behind jabs, he has never shied away from a challenge.

He might take a route that might include a unification milestone, and Subriel Matias could be the next fight. Alternatively, he could wind up defending his title against Sandor Martin, which might be a hard fight to sell on PPV. It’s hard to conclude where Haney might head next. But it will serve him well if he finds a top contender at 140 pounds, and if possible, brush aside Ryan Garcia in the boxing ring.
