Ryan Garcia is in a state of flux. Should he chase a mouth-watering fight against newly crowned WBC champion Devin Haney or keep pushing for the rematch against Gervonta Davis? Ever since ‘The Dream’ started his reign at the top in the 140-pound division a week ago, the eyeballs have been at the division. There are growing tensions between Haney and Davis, and this has pushed ‘KingRy’ out of the limelight. However, it might unfold into the best possible scenario for Garcia.

Garcia and Devin Haney have recently started their journey in the super lightweight division, and life at 140 has been successful. Both have started with a win, and fans are expecting them to meet soon in the ring. While options for Haney are plentiful, Garcia has already chalked out a plan for himself. Dislodge Rolly Romero as the WBA champion and meet Haney next in the square circle. Meanwhile, the American boxer also has revenge in mind for the Davis fight, if that materializes. But before that, he needs to bolster his resume, let boxing gods and promoters play their bit, and watch the action untangle.

The 25-year-old had a horrible start to the year when he dropped the fight against Gervonta Davis in April. He turned in a lackluster performance, got hit to the body, and then took a knee. Garcia soon decided to move up and returned to the winner’s column against Oscar Duarte earlier this month, on December 2.

However, once again, Garcia’s performance exhibited that he is a flawed fighter who is willing to adjust and add more tricks to his arsenal. He has just started to regain his confidence. He needs to mold himself into a better boxer and has to fight his way to the top of the 140 division by thrashing some quality fighters before he goes blow-to-blow with either Devin Haney or Gervonta Davis.

The gap in their skills, especially Garcia’s and Haney’s, is huge, and fighting him head-on would be disastrous for Garcia. In addition, the California native needs to adjust to the weight demands of 140, as he is a relatively smaller fighter compared to the other two. But if Garcia ends up picking apart Rolly Romero, who should he pick next?

Conundrum: A rematch with Gervonta Davis or a unification bout with Devin Haney

The answer would be the winner of Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney. While the heated rivalry between Garcia and Davis is enough to ensure a rematch, the fight with Haney makes the most sense currently. The fans might want to watch Garcia redeem himself against Davis. But the latter might be reluctant to agree to a rematch, given how poor Garcia has looked in his fight with Duarte.

If Garcia picks up the WBA super lightweight title by March of next year, he might be in a better position to challenge Haney for the unification title. Before that, he can let Haney have a go at Gervonta Davis, a lethal power puncher who can probably put him to canvas.

Fans and pundits alike are aware of Garcia’s limitations as a boxer and his boxing prowess. Garcia might bite the dust off a champion who swelled up to 165 pounds before fighting Regis Prograis on December 9. Undoubtedly, he needs time to figure out how to beat two boxing stars. But once Haney and Davis have battled it out in the boxing ring, they will chase a fight with Garcia.

What do Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney lack? Haney is a technical fighter who fails to pull a crowd and, therefore, is not a PPV star. Devin Haney’s fight with Regis Prograis reportedly brought in 50,000 PPV buys. On the other hand, Davis is not a regular boxer. His inactivity puts him in a weak bargaining position, despite his immense popularity.

Those are the areas where Garcia shines. Not only can he rake in a million PPVs due to his charisma, but he can also bring a large younger fan base into the fight. He remains a bigger draw than both Haney and Davis. Adding a championship crown will only add to his star power, which both Haney and Davis might envy.
