When Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez announced that he was going to fight Jermell Charlo, it sent ripples of excitement and anticipation in the boxing realm. The pound-for-pound fighter, touted as one of the best of this era, took up a fight against a boxer who jumped up two weight classes. From the super-welterweight class, Charlo went up to super-middleweight to challenge Alvarez. The fight, one of its kind, was heavily skewed towards the Mexican fighter.
During fight night, the T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas witnessed a one-sided domination. His precision jabs, signature calm, and impressive footwork enabled him to establish his dominance right from the beginning. As each round took its course, spectators knew what was to come. As most anticipated a knockout by Alvarez, the fighter secured a victory via unanimous decision. Coming down heavy on the fighter’s way of handing a defeat to Charlo is his biggest critique, Oscar De La Hoya.

One of the biggest nights in the boxing realm, 30th September, saw every big name from the industry descend at the arena to witness the undisputed vs. undisputed fight. As the fight concluded, many came down heavily against ‘Iron Man’ Charlo for not being able to get a strong foothold in the fight. Many felt that Jermell Charlo had no intention of winning the fight based on his performance. Meanwhile, Canelo emerged as the dominant fighter, being the aggressor throughout the bout. But his former promoter looked at the fight from a different perspective.
Post-fight, when ‘Golden Boy’ was asked for his thoughts on Canelo’s victory, he stated that he expected a knockout from the Mexican. Talking to Fight Hub TV, he said, “He could have stopped Charlo. He should have. I mean, first of all, you had a fighter who was there just for the payday. Literally, he’s in the biggest stage of his life. Go out there and take some risks.”
A completely booked T-Mobile Arena came expecting a spectacular showdown between the two adept fighters. But ‘Golden Boy’ thinks they failed to deliver so. He said, “You know fight hard. People paid their money. People buy it at pay-per-view. Fight hard. Because when you fight hard, you don’t lose anything, Great fight, there’s no loser. When a fighter throws one punch, when two fighters throw one punch in one round, I mean, what do you expect? The fans expect to be entertained. So that was my critique. Is coming from a fighter, from a world champion. Yeah, I was bored.”
Golden Boy Calls on Canelo to take up fight against Benavidez
In the wake of his victory against the Texan fighter, a section of boxing fans wanted Canelo to fight David Benavidez. But the anticipation for this potential matchup is not new. Ahead of his Charlo fight, he was making headlines for a possible bout against Benavidez. But the massive payout lured him to take on Charlo. Now that the dust has settled on this fight, Golden Boy has called on Canelo to fight ‘The Mexican Monster.’
Speaking about the potential fight, the promoter said, “I like to know that he feels invincible at 168 pounds, I’m excited about that because it means we will see a fight between David Benavidez and Canelo.” Asking to prove his mettle as an invincible fighter, De La Hoya said, “If he considers himself invincible, that’s good for boxing, that’s great for the sport. We will continue to see Canelo for as long as it lasts.”
