In 2018, while still being promoted by Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez signed an 11-fight deal worth $365 Million with DAZN. However, in 2020, Alvarez accused Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN of failing to provide the Mexican boxer with satisfactory plans. Therefore, claiming DAZN and Golden Boy had breached the contract, Canelo Alvarez filed a lawsuit which he ultimately won and therefore released from his contract with Golden Boy Promotions.

Now, after years, De La Hoya, who promotes Jame Munguia, is working with Canelo Alvarez once again. In this context, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions revealed what Munguia vs. Alvarez meant to him. Here is what the promoter said.

Oscar De La Hoya is “happy” to have Jaime Munguia face Canelo Alvarez in the ring

After the Sergey Kovalev fight in November 2019, unhappy with the treatment he received from DAZN and Golden Boy, Canelo demanded he be compensated with $280 Million. In addition, he wanted a release. As a result, DAZN offered Alvarez a “restructured deal.”, and he ultimately ended up re-signing alongside Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

Anyway, it has been some time now since Oscar De La Hoya has been juxtaposing Canelo Alvarez with Jaime Munguia. Ahead of Munguia vs. Ryder in January this year, De La Hoya called Munguia the “next Mexican superstar“. Additionally, he confidently declared that, unlike Canelo, Jaime would do “what Canelo couldn’t and knock John Ryder out.” While Munguia did not KO Ryder, he stopped the latter in the 9th round of the fight. And finally, now that Munguia vs. Canelo is happening, De La Hoya said, “It feels great.”

Just like another fight in the books for us. We’re extremely happy and proud that we can get our fighters in this position. Just the way I got Canelo in this position. Now it’s Jaime and boxing just continues to thrive. And that’s what it’s all about,” said Oscar De La Hoya.

We feel that if we can work with promoters the way we’re working with Canelo, the way we’re working with PBC, fights happen. And I’ve been preaching this for a very long time. It’s finally here. I‘ve been promoting this fight before it even happened,” he added.

On the other hand, Alvarez had earlier said he would not face a fellow Mexican boxer in the ring. But now, Canelo believes “someone respectful like Munguia” has “earned this fight“. On that note, De La Hoya added, “And I’ve always felt that getting two Mexican Nationals in the ring at the elite level, there is nothing better to watch.” With that said, what do you make of De La Hoya’s statements?
