Oscar De La Hoya Comes Clean on “Animosity” From Canelo Alvarez’s Side During Jaime Munguia Fight Negotiations

Come May 4th, the much-anticipated fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia will take place in Las Vegas. While excitement for the fight soars high, promoter, Oscar De La Hoya sheds light on the “animosity” that was rampant behind the screens.

For a while now, it was assumed that a major hurdle in getting Canelo vs. Munguia rolling would be the bitter dynamics that exist between the stakeholders. While ‘Golden Boy’ and Canelo continue to remain sore since their promotional agreement fell through in 2020, PBC’s Al Haymon and the promoter are also fitting competitors. Amidst it all, the fight is now slated to see the light of the day. What did it take to make it happen? De La Hoya reveals.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia: Through Animosity

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the 51-year-old, kingpin explained how he and his team navigated through the animus he had with PBC and Canelo.“There was obviously a lot of animosity, so you can imagine the negotiations, you know? I have my front people who are dealing with the other side because obviously I can’t speak to them directly, I think I’m a threat or something, I don’t know.”

He further explained, “I have my people you know? I have the orders that I give right, along with Fernando Beltran who’s my partner with Munguia. But we made it happen, you know? We made happen, and that’s all that matters and counts.”

Mexican fighter, Jaime Mungia is currently the marquee fighter under the Golden Boy banner. After his latest victory over John Ryder, the team has been exploring the best avenues to see him fight next. One, that would be his ideal opponent was Canelo Alvarez. However, the promoter assumed that the fight would not happen. In an interview, he even noted, “No, no chance, no. I don’t think so.”

Imagine this: the big names, Oscar De La Hoya, PBC’s Al Haymon, and Canelo Alvarez, who do not see eye to eye, all together to make one big event happen. Isn’t that the showdown of all showdowns? However, one pertinent question that also emerged through it all was whether De La Hoya would be allowed to be in attendance for the fight. Now, he breaks his silence to clear speculations around it.

In the interview, the Golden Boy was asked if there were any demands made from the other side to keep him from attending one of the most crucial fights of his promotions company. He said, “There was all kinds of sh*t. But, no we cleared everything up. Oh, Oscar can’t be a part of it? F*ck you, guys. You know? What are you talking about? This is my company. It’s Golden Boy. How can I not be there?”
