However, David’s opinion of the fight is different. According to him, his recent fight was a mismatch. Not only this, he has also teased a matchup with him.

Why does David Benavidez think Charlo vs. Canelo was a “mismatch”?

After Dmitry Bivol, David Benavidez also believes the fight was unfair. He acknowledges Charlo’sprowess at 154 pounds. However, he thinks Canelo needs tougher opponents. Benavidez sees himself as the only remaining strong fighter in Canelo’s weight class. As David said, “I just think the fight was a mismatch. I mean, obviously, Charlo is a unified champion at 154. I feel Canelo needs more challenges, like what people consider really solidified, strong fighters at his weight class…”

Furthermore, he emphasized that he doesn’t want to criticize Canelo. Instead, he wants to focus on his own career. He aims for greatness by fighting top fighters like Dmitry. As resonated in his viewpoint, “The only one left is me, so I mean, I don’t want to really go criticizing Canelo. I’m making my own lane. I’m trying to achieve my own greatness. The only way I do that is by fighting great fighters like Dmitry.”

But looks like Benavidez is quite interested in Canelo’s ventures as recently he discussed Saul’s matchup with Terence Crawford.

David Benavidez talked about a possible Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford fight. Bud, the reigning welterweight champion, says he would move up three weight classes to fight Canelo. However, Benavidez thinks Canelo is too big for Crawford. He advised Canelo to fight someone in his own weight class. This would help Canelo avoid criticism for fighting smaller opponents. As he conveyed to ES News, “To be honest with you, I think Crawford is a great fighter – but Canelo is just too big. It’s going up three weight classes! I’m sure Crawford feels like he can beat him. But I think Canelo needs to fight someone in his same weight class.”

Furthermore, he accuses Canelo of dodging a fight with him. A fight between them might happen in the first half of 2024. Before that, Benavidez has to beat Demetrius Andrade in November. This win could open the doors for his fight against Canelo.
