Oleksandr Usyk Injury Update Ahead of Tyson Fury Fight: Will the Undisputed Heavyweight Clash Be Postponed for the Next Year?

It’s been a wait that seems to have crossed the borders of frustration into the land of mystification. Ever since Lennox Lewis, the Heavyweight boxing division has yet to enthrone an undisputed champion. Finally, a solution to the nearly two-decade-old riddle appeared on the horizon. The fans’ happiness seemed unbound when they learned that Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would finally meet to settle the undisputed debate. However, the latest update might be a spoiler.

Oleksandr Usyk has shared that he sustained injuries after the last title defense against Daniel Dubois two months ago. However, he confirms that it’s not severe enough to throw a spanner in the works for the much-vaunted fight with Fury. So how does it bode for the match? Reportedly, the attempt has been to close the battle by December this year. But given the time frame that Usyk mentioned for a return, does it mean the bout might face a pushback to the early months of next year?

The Ukrainian world champion was speaking on his YouTube channel. Sharing a few details about his physical condition, he said, “I can’t say that everything’s okay. But I’m fine. Some wounds, old injuries need to be healed. Everything’s under control. I do my training sessions every day, but I need 14 weeks for my camp. It would be enough time for me. The first weeks, I’m doing my work, that helps me to get ready for the training camp. Then I’m working hard for the next 12 weeks.”

Per the available reports, December 23 appeared to have been earmarked for the meetup. But now, given the time he has sought to prepare himself for the raging Fury, it seems most likely that clash will get postponed to next year’s first quarter. But surprisingly, Usyk seems keen to close the business by December. He said, “I would like it to be in December, but there’s no certainty.”

He added that getting precise details regarding the date, and place of the match would have been great. It would have helped him chalk out a training camp plan. However, what Tyson Fury has in mind shouldn’t be undermined amidst the developments. He will take on former UFC Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh this Saturday. Hence, fans would eagerly look forward to his response, whether to have the fight by December or take it for the new year.
