It was late 2020 when one of the best fighters of today left De La Hoya. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez called it quits with the promoter. The fighter sued De La Hoya, his promotions company, and DAZN after the alleged breach of contract and sought $280 million in damages. However, as their relationship turned sour, the fighter was absolved of his contract.

Years later, the story seems to have reached a full-circle moment. One of the most promising fighters in the realm today, Ryan Garcia stands where Canelo stood. Instead, this time, he’s being sued by the promoter for breach of contract.

Canelo Alvarez Revisits his Fallout with Oscar De La Hoya

In a few hours from now, Canelo Alvarez will undertake one of his most anticipated fights. The capital of the boxing realm, T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas will see the pound-for-pound fighter go against Jermell Charlo in a bid to defend his title. As he brings his crusade against the undisputed fighter, he has gone down memory lane while being candid about his fallout with ‘Golden Boy.’ He said, “I’m glad to go away from him. He’s f**ing crazy. He’s a hypocrite. He doesn’t have any fighters left.”

Drawing parallels of his experience with the promoter to that of Ryan Garcia, he said, “Ryan Garcia is in a problem with him. Nobody wants to be with him because he’s not loyal. Right now he’s talking s** about me, but if I went with him it would be, ‘Oh he’s the best pound-for-pound.’” Oscar De La Hoya is not the only point of commonality between the raging fighters. The two were formerly teammates, but now do not see eye-to-eye with each other.

Both Canelo and Ry used to train with Eddy Reynoso. Last March, the fighter decided to leave Reynoso’s stables. The fighter substantiated his decision with claims that he did not get enough attention from the trainer. Taking direct offense to the slander thrown at his trainer, the Mexican fighter, Canelo said, “Eddy has time for all the fighters, you ask everybody. If you have the time to put in the gym and train really good with discipline, Eddy is always going to be there.”

Yet again, Canelo drew comparisons with Ry, he said “I’ve been with Eddy for a lot of years. I saw when a lot of good fighters come to the gym, really good fighters, and (Reynoso) is here all the time. If you come … and train for only 20 minutes, then you don’t come for four days, three days, OK? Then the next day, you say ‘I come in at 12’ and then come at two? So, you need to be disciplined.”
