Having a painfully difficult childhood shaped Terence Crawford into the boxing sensation that he is today. The undisputed Welterweight champion grew up in a neighborhood in Omaha where from a young age, his mother, Debra Crawford made sure he was filled with rage which he would eventually channel into fights. His father, Terry Crawford, however, was his best friend.
Now that the angry child is all grown up and has bagged multiple championships, he is looking for ways to repay his parents and keep them happy and comfortable. On his father’s birthday, Terence presented him with a truck.

Growing up, a young Terence saw his parents drink and argue often. While his mother was more of a ‘tough love’ person, his dad was his comfort space. His dad was always proud of him and would let a 2-year-old Terence hit his arms. His dad, however, did not stay very often at their home and it would break the child’s heart every time he left. Senior Crawford came forward and extended his support for his son in his last fight against Errol Spence Jr. In an interview, he said Terence is a man who does not get hit if he does not want to. He was impressed with the discipline and humility his son showed. The said fight added a whopping $21 million to Terence’s pocket.

The love between the father and son will melt your heart. Having established his dominance in the boxing world and earning millions, Terence decided to surprise his father on his birthday. He posted an endearing story on Instagram on Friday. Wishing him a happy birthday, Terence wrote- “Happy Birthday Dad. Hope you enjoy your new truck” with a picture of him and his father posing in front of the birthday gift, a shiny grey truck.
Terence Crawford’s tumultuous childhood
While the father remained absent most of the time, Terence’s mum had a few unusual ways of toughening up her child. After having lost her brother, she used to get reminded of him by watching Terence’s moves. She claims the easy switch that he does in his fights comes naturally to him, passed on by his uncle. She would go as far as to pay the neighborhood children to thrash a young Crawford.
While she hit him with whatever she could lay her hands on, the boy got used to the pain and developed a tolerance for it. When he was 13, he finally stood up, grabbed the belt he was getting hit with and stopped his mother from going any further.

Though Crawford admits it was not the most pleasant experience, he has no resentment towards his mother. Both of them share a loving relationship. When asked about everything his mother put him through, Crawford explains it is what molded him into the fighter he is today.
Hardships and challenges are what shape a strong man. While the ‘good parent’ showered Terence with love, the ‘bad parent’ took it up on herself to make sure he became one of the most inspiring fighters out there. What do you think of the relationship Terence Crawford shares with his parents?
