He might have left boxing a good many summers ago. But boxing still needs Mike Tyson. Despite widespread business interests and entertainment responsibilities, the youngest Heavyweight champion in history makes time for the sport that brought him laurels and fortune. Many credit him for bringing around one of the year’s most significant fights that reportedly pulled in $22.8 million from the gate alone. However, the legend begs to differ. He believes what he’s doing now has the potential to reach unprecedented heights.
As the story goes, Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia took up the cudgels to square up in his studio. It eventually culminated in the April 22 bonanza. Later, in a surprise move, Tyson accepted the responsibility of scaling up Francis Ngannou. The latter will make his pro boxing debut on October 28 against Tyson Fury. Given the sheer profile of the protagonists, the bout is touted as one of the biggest of the year. Thus, while speaking to the media, Tyson espoused that the slugfest has all the ingredients to make it a one-of-a-kind event.

The Fury-Ngannou fight has traveled through the kick-off press conference. The hype around the match is gradually surging as the days close by. Representatives from the media were treated to an open workout. Mike Tyson closely monitored Ngannou’s moves and punches, preparing him to face one of the deadliest hitters in the game. Toward the end, some of them had the opportunity to interact with Tyson and other training team members.
One of the reporters asked ‘Iron’ Mike, “Mike, you know you [you] were part of the biggest fight this year with Ryan and Tank. You know Ryan came on your platform, so, um, what do you think is the next biggest fight in boxing? Is this [going to] involve Tank? Tank is [going to] fight, fight Shakur or Devin.” The former Heavyweight champion replied, “Well, this is the biggest fight in boxing right now.”
When asked whether it stood out more prominent than the Ryan Garcia-Gervonta Davis fight, Mike Tyson replied in the affirmative. Then the next question came about the possibility of ‘The Predator’ defeating ‘The Gypsy King.’ The youngest Heavyweight champion said, “It will be the biggest upset in the history of entertainment.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with soccer legend Rio Ferdinand, Tyson Fury admitted what a loss to Ngannou would mean. The fact remains that he is fighting on his home turf and thus remains a favorite to win by a clear margin. Nevertheless, it would do good for everyone to remember that ‘The Predator,’ in his time at UFC, had managed some of the most magnificent stoppages.
Twelve out of his seventeen mixed martial arts wins came through knockouts. But could he replicate it in the squared circle? Eventually, wonders never cease, and that is something many of his die-hard fans would be pining for.
