Miami Open 2024: Why Did Security Stop Mike Tyson From Getting to His Seat During Azarenka vs Putintseva?

Mike Tyson and tennis games are not exactly a match made in heaven. Despite his ardent love for the sport, the former heavyweight champion seems to always run into trouble while attending tennis games. On Tuesday, he attended the Miami Open to witness the action up close as world no. 27 Victoria Azarenka took on Yulia Putintseva in the quarterfinal. However, the American boxer couldn’t reach his seat to enjoy the action as a security guard stopped him. Why did that happen?

A clip shared by Sky Sports reveals that Tyson, 57, had a hard time while being stopped by security. He had taken some time off training for his next fight with Jake Paul and had dropped by Miami to watch the slick action. Instead, he grew annoyed as he was asked to wait. The Sky Sports commentators also turned their attention to the amusing situation. One commentator called the guard “brave,” but also jokingly asked, “You know this is Mike Tyson?” So did Tyson break a rule, and the guard apprehended him for the same?

‘Iron Mike’ was trying to get to his seat, but the play was going on. According to the rules, you can’t leave your seats or move until there is a stoppage in play. So, one has to wait until there is a break, which is usually until the end of a game. The security guard also kept Tyson occupied on the sidelines until there was a stoppage in play and then let him go to his seat.

This is not the first time Tyson’s appearance at the Miami Open has caused trouble for him. Last year, the 50-6 record holder delayed the final between Elena Rybakina and Petra Kvitova. He caused an uproar as he arrived fashionably late, and when the umpire noticed him standing in the audience while Rybakina was going through her serve, he asked the audience to take their seats. Amusingly, when Tyson took his seat, the crowd erupted in cheers and ensured an additional break would follow.

The New York native is passionate about tennis, as he has not only attended the Miami Open but also appeared at the US Open and Indian Wells. Moreover, his daughter Milan has grown fond of tennis and even trained with Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. Undoubtedly, Tyson has a profound love for tennis, which he once admitted to Mouratoglou.

Tyson’s tryst with tennis: intertwined with love for Milan

Tyson told Mouratoglou that tennis had changed his life. That’s partly because Milan took up tennis and is gradually taking the world by storm. He said, “Our whole life has changed over tennis. I thought we were doing well and everything and everything we were doing was making money. But that’s not bigger than my daughter playing tennis.”

Tyson has high hopes for Milan and because of Milan, we will continue to see him making appearances at different prestigious tennis tournaments. Hopefully, he doesn’t get in trouble when Milan is serving next time.
