So what if Canelo Alvarez is not there for an ‘All-Mexicana’? Ask Marco Antonio Barrera, and he will reveal that there are other variables to complete the equation! Last month, on January 17, the living legend turned fifty. But he can still give guys half his age a run for their money. It’s been over a decade since “El Barreta” retired. However, he still retains that same rapier-like sharpness that propelled him through the 1990s and the 2000s.
As per the available reports, Canelo Alvarez could be in the ring twice this year—a May, Cinco de May opener, followed by a closing blockbuster in the fall. Now, rumor mills are rife with talks of Alvarez facing Jermall Charlo or perhaps Terence Crawford in May. However, in either scenario, where one of the boxers is chosen, what are the chances of a David Benavidez fight? Most of the fans hope that at least one of the year’s two fights could be against the mandatory challenger, making it an ‘All-Mexican’ delight. But they need not lose hope, says Barrera. He believes a solution is at hand.

Right from the outset, ‘El Barreta’ maintained that Canelo Alvarez should fight David Benavidez. “But he’s missing that one fight, and there’s Benavidez; I believe he could fight with Benavidez. A clash—that’s what we want to see,” he said.
However, he doesn’t seem to approve of a fight with Jermall Charlo. When one of the reporters asked for his views on a possible clash, Barrera replied, “Personally, I don’t like it; I think it was already proven with his brother (Jermell).” As far as Jermall Charlo is concerned, though he has beaten Jose Benavidez Jr., he still remains a weight division down from Canelo. So why does Canelo Alvarez need to follow such a fight again, probed Barrera.
He then raised a poser: “What other fight should we think about in a case like this?” Then, answering himself, he said that a fight between Jaime Munguia and David Benavidez sounds very intriguing. After all, they are two boxers who just love to hit and get hit. It will be a Mexican against a Mexican-American who is from Jalisco and a member of the Benavidez family. So that fight might as well turn out to be one of the best, according to the boxing legend.

“Well, it could be Munguia with Benavidez (David) too. It’s a terrific scrap. Two boxers who love to exchange blows, A Mexican-American with a Mexican-American who is from Jalisco, part of the Benavidez family. I think that fight could currently be in the spotlight among the best ones,” said the former three-division champion.
Strictly speaking, what the boxing great said doesn’t sound too off-the-mark to many fans. Given how he demolished John Ryder, who incidentally took Canelo Alvarez the whole distance last year, Jaime Munguia has delivered a statement. Hence, going against another aggressive boxer such as ‘The Mexican Monster’ only heightens the intensity of the fight. Both are in the prime of their careers, two unbeaten warriors. So their fight stands every chance of reaping rich dividends against what some of the skeptics may want to think.
